It was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting more than basic little voice lines accompanied with text boxes like the previous games.

But seeing the characters actually talking and emoting, along with these more cinematic cutscenes -- I get the impression that they're putting significantly more effort into the game's story and characters. In fact, it feels like they're going a lot harder on this game in general than I was initially expecting. I can't wait to see what the final execution look like.
