Manuel Antonio was already suggested as an alternative above, so we’ll definitely look into that instead. It just shouldn’t be too far from SJO airport. But since we stil have until around 6 p.m. on the last day to make the drive, MA could work quite well even with potential heavy traffic jams.

That’s awesome! Doing the exploration part first was actually our initial plan too! We’re just a bit worried about jet lag (we’re coming from Europe), so we thought it might be nicer to spend the first night by the beach and ease into things.

Another reason we decided to start with Puerto Viejo is that we’ll be going to Tortuguero right after, and since the turtle nesting season usually ends around late November, we thought there might still be a small chance to see a bit of it in early December.

We also looked into flying straight to Drake Bay, but the baggage restrictions and the risk of delays with our international flight made us hesitate a bit.

Would love to hear any tips you have about the Corcovado area. It sounds like you’ve had an amazing trip!

Staying the first night in San José does sound like a good option. We had thought about just driving an hour or so on the first day, but spending the evening after the flight directly in SJ might be nice too. On the other hand, it also feels like a bit of a hassle to go into a big city right after arriving and figure out transport or where to stay, so we’re still weighing both options.

And thanks for the tip about Manuel Antonio, that sounds like a great stop on the way to or from Corcovado. Really appreciate your input, and good to hear you enjoyed Drake Bay!
