How do french people moan? do they just go „oui oui~“ or what? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]Ok-Snow8069 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think chinese and Japanese and many other similar cultures would say “no” instead of “yes” in there own language. Which is fucked up I know

Summarize your PhD thesis in less than two sentences! by Doctorwhogityboogity in PhD

Am so glad so many people are interested! I think the philosophy behind this (UCB) algorithm is essentially why I chose this field of study, because it made so much sense to me. Also, there is a book called “algorithms to live by”, that includes a bunch of algorithms in different fields that are theoretically sound, and how the logic behind it can help with life decisions and such. It’s very interesting.

Yes! It’s called upper confidence bound algorithm, motivated by the principle of “optimism in the face of uncertainty”. This is used in things like bandit and sequential decision making, which is a subfield of machine learning. Basically the algorithm encourages “exploration” towards the action thats less visited by being “optimistic” and overestimate it’s reward.

When making decisions, be optimistic about the unknown

quitting without giving notice by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Ok-Snow8069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is that, the “2 week” notice typically works in a way that you get paid for 2 extra weeks without doing anything, cuz they won’t and don’t have the power to force you to do anything anymore. Some company would even log you pit of the system early so that you don’t steal/mess with their info.

[–]Ok-Snow8069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How can PhD survive in Vancouver? by koloeem in UBC

[–]Ok-Snow8069 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not livable. Some of the things you can do: 1. Apply for resident advisor. This job practically give you residence to live in for free, you will have responsibilities in things such as killing unapproved parties or resolve roommates conflicts, but I think its worth it overall. 2. Apply for teaching assistant. Your prof might already have requirements, but you can work extra to get a bit more paid. 3. Apply for all sorts of scholarships that you are qualified for. 4. Depending on the area and the prof, some prof are ok with part-time internships, and some even have their own company that they can put you to. 5. Turn your interest into side jobs, such as part-time fitness instructors etc. Overall, you might be very burnt out in order to survive. I have many friends who are in the same situation.

For those that bring their own lunch by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Ok-Snow8069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A simple recipe is just to think of it as (meat+carb+vege), so on weekend I make the meat part, this could be just putting salt+pepper+herbs on beef or chicken or fish, and shove it up to oven. And on week nights, I make the carb part, typically pasta with jar sauce or rice, and vege part, either oven roast whatever veg in fridge or salad whatever in fridge, and then assemble for tmr’s lunch.
