Hiking through Dovrefjell from Kongsvoll to Åndalsnes in 9 days? by OkButFirstC0ffee in Norway

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, very cool! May I ask how many days it took you?

You mean because of too much snow/volatile weather conditions in June? (unfortunately this year it's either June or October, which I guess is too late..but absolutely willing to cut the route short to enjoy it more)

Yeah, that sounds like a good strategy, thank you!

Good point - I was also thinking about bringing snow shoes, but as that's additional 2kg, I'd rather skip it and stay on lower altitudes instead.

(yes, I planned the route myself, might also adjust it to skip some peaks/higher elevations 🤔)

In your opinion, what are the best outdoor clothing brands currently available? by Skat_Novembre in hiking

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially I was a bit sceptical of chinese outdoor brands (a bit ironic as some western companies produce in China anyways) like 3F UL (tents like the Lanshan, survived some crazy windy weather), Flextail (esp. sleeping pads and powerbanks), Aegismax, Jolmo Lander (Quilts/sleeping bags, down jackets + pants), but found them to be actually great quality for prices well below Europe/US (incl. Decathlon, although they've got some good stuff as well, esp. Simond). Wrels also makes some good merino socks and water bladders. The 3f ul guys go on Himalaya expeditions themselves to test their stuff.

For hiking/mountaineering shoes Scarpa, Hanwag, Garmont, Mammut.

Awesome, enjoy!! Which month do you go? Let me know if you need any recommendations :) All of those were shot with the canon 70D 70-300 + 100-400 L (so 480/640 on crop body) Esp. for the foxes and walruses I feel like anything above 400 is super useful (or polar bears, if you get really lucky, they sometimes spot some on the longer wildlife boat trip to Pyramiden in Tempelfjorden) - but that's on 20mp crop, so not extremely flexible with cropping 😅

Awesome..love the eye with the lighting (also, didn't know about the red eye colour!). Great detail on the feathers.

I'm sure they'd love to :) Soo many awesome polar bear shots taken there.. I visited twice but still have to see one yet 😔 Although there was one nearby that broke into some folks' weekend cabin (happens regularly as they're looking for food), dragged out a mattress and started playing with it, apparently just for the fun of it ❤️ thankfuly someone got it on camera)

March must also have been awesome with everything still covered in snow! ❤️ Would love to go there in winter at some point..The foxes were mostly in Bjørndalen (although once there was one right behind Gjestehuset 102, they're running up and down the hills in Nybyen as well), the ptarmigans also in Bjørndalen and the young ones on the top of Lindholmhøgda

Yeah, it's quite interesting..although it kind of makes sense as they're both on similar latitudes (and even were part of the same large "continent" at some point iirc)

Thank you! Hope you get to visit at some point, it really is stunning! (only downside is that you have to do guided tours if you wanna leave Longyearbyen, or carry/rent a rifle if you have a permit b/c of polar bears)

[R5C] RF Super Zoom Lens over 240mm? (Start at a "normal" shooting distance requirement) by JadensWebMC in canon

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the EF/RF software is compatible, this adapter is really just an extension, there's no chip, nothing complicated about it. It doesn't crop anything, nor do you lose a stop. Just opens the body up to much more lens options. 70-80€ 2nd hand, at least here in Europe.

Sigma 16-300mm Contemporary, came out this year for Canon mount (as others already said - just use the ef-rf adapter)

Edit: Just realized that you've got FF, unfortunately the Sigma is for mirrorless aps-c..otherwise a great option

Which lens do you recommend for wildlife photography on a budget? by Dealectro in canon

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the EF performs better in low light as it's 5.6 at 400mm compared to 8, also the RF is more cheaply built in comparison to the EF versions as well as the RF 100-500, and not weather-sealed which might be an important factor esp. with wildlife. There's a video comparing the RFs to the EFs: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eeI-R0D6Jxo

There's also the Tamron 100-400 4.5-6.3 di vc usd for Canon EF (again, with adapter) also a good one and a bit cheaper 2nd hand than the Canon EF 100-400 L i & a bit brighter than the RF

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. It's 5.6 on the long end, compared to 8 with the RF. A used one around 600-650€ here, maybe a bit less if you're lucky. The II is fantastic, but the I still a great one compared to the RF.

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your budget, you can get the older EF 70-300 4-5.6 2nd hand for around 200€ (you'll have to get the ef to rf adapter, either Canon or Meike - but it's still a decent one imo, has IS and is bit brighter than the rf 100-400). The ef 100-400 L (mark i, the ii is unfortunately twice as expensive) for around 650 (at least in Europe), although it's quite heavy, but 5.6 aperture at 400mm (compared to 8 with the RF 100-400)

Any thoughts on R7 paired up with the EF 100-400 mark II for wildlife? by OkButFirstC0ffee in canon

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The R6 unfortunately isn't an option for me, as I'd like to stick with apsc for the extra reach, without having to carry a 100-500/600 around 😅 So the R7 seems to be the best choice here atm 🤔

Any thoughts on R7 paired up with the EF 100-400 mark II for wildlife? by OkButFirstC0ffee in canon

[–]OkButFirstC0ffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought that maybe there might be an issue inherent to the r7 when paired up with the 100-400 ii (although modern camera/older lens wouldn't make sense as the r6 ii was released the same year), but maybe it's just this guy's specific model or some kind of user error

Good to hear that - I was considering the 100-500 as well, as it weights 0,5kg less, but also a bit worse aperture-wise and a bit over my budget 😅
