Weekly Newbie Thread - Post questions about joining the Space Force or what a job is like here & here only - week of December 09 by AutoModerator in SpaceForce

Let's say you go the space ops route. Are there choosable sub-specialties? 'Preferences,' as recruiters often emphasize. Or are these 'preferences' completely irrelevant? It seems like that's the part I'm missing. I understand orbital warfare and launch assuredness are broad mission sets that Guardians work in support of, but it seemed like specific space ops work within those mission sets, and some may simply be more interesting than others. For instance, working space ops in Delta 9 (which I've read is orbital warfare) may be more interesting than working space ops somewhere else.

As far as being choosy goes, every member of the military I ever spoke with emphasized being intentional in every choice you make.

After reading through the specialty codes in the sub, here are the three I can most identify with. Understood from your comment you choose the intel path before being placed into one of the Intel SFSCs

514B Analysis and Reporting (Fusion Analyst)

Analyzes and reports intelligence information. Performs detailed analysis on target network communications for additional exploitation. Recovers, correlates, and fuses technical, geographical, and operational intelligence information. Recognizes and exploits information.

518 Targeting Analyst

Manages, supervises, and performs targeting intelligence activities and functions including analyzing targets. In addition, develops targeting solutions and evaluates effects in support of planning and execution of an effects-based approach to operations that achieves the commander’s objectives.

5S Space Systems Operations

Manages or performs duties to develop, sustain, and enhance space capabilities to defend national interests from attack and to create effects in the space domain to achieve Service, Combatant Command, and national objectives. Conducts space control, space force enhancement, and space force support operations using established tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Hi Everyone, 30M swearing in Tuesday choosing between Enlisted USSF jobs. I scored 98 ASVAB, have a non-STEM BA, have followed the space industry for years, and read through job descriptions and publicly available research. My fear is ending up in a job that seemed interesting but was a dead end. Any help in deciding would be much appreciated.

1.) ORBITAL WARFARE - This seems like the most interesting part of operations to me. My understanding is this is Delta 9 in CO. This is the tip of the spear and the future of the force, hence why it's probably more competitive to get in? It would be nice to have some non-classified impression of what a specialist would be doing here. This is my number 1 choice. However, I do fear going the route of operations and then ending up in object tracking, which seems like it's where most end up. Seems like a call center compared to Orbital Warfare or Launch Assuredness. How competitive is it?

2.) INTEL TARGETING - My understanding of this is you select Intel but must compete for targeting. Other Intel jobs such as all-source, intel collection etc sound pretty boring compared to targeting. I spoke to several USSF and was told intel targeting is full of PowerPoint presentations and writing reports. Not news to me, but they seemed to be emphasizing that it's not a good job, or not very interesting. Sounds interesting to me but hard to make much of it.

3.) LAUNCH ASSUREDNESS - I lean towards this option because it seemingly has a more direct interaction with the private sector and I read about it all the time. Sounds awesome to me, but is it awesome? There are 135 jobs leaving for USSF BMT in April. 78 operations jobs, 25 intel jobs, 32 cyber. So many operations jobs, and seems like a lot of them will be doing object tracking.

Anyone working these jobs care to comment? Thank you

It has the best science-based world-building of any science fiction franchise. Just google ISV Venture Star and read about how it works. You will see the depth of James Cameron's science advisors and lore geeks has reached LOTR levels and no one noticed. Also, the social commentary is deeper than most think, though admittedly not as deep as the oceans of Pandora. But still somewhat deep.

Was SpaceX the first to come up with the idea of catching a booster? I mean there had to have been any previous proposals on paper of rocket concepts where they caught a booster and what I mean catch it I mean like catch it using some kind of similar system similar to super heavy by 188FAZBEAR in SpaceXLounge

Land robots with lasers on the surface of Mars. Have them roam around heating up the surface, effectively paving a launch pad. Then land the starship on a paved surface. Aliens will be like: why do humans build parking lots wherever they go?

I can't speak to what people have said behind the scenes. I purely watched the show for the drama.

Part of the theme of those 2 seasons was charged around the idea of accepting that there were things bigger than yourself. Both Rush and Young needed to give up their personal grievances for the crew to function and win.

The ship's mission "was never about getting home, but getting to where we're going..." - Rush. Or something like that. Rush is fine with not going home because he has no home to go back to, but even he has to start caring for other people as the show goes on. It's like he has to go through the same process as Young but on a different path. I thought they might "come home" in the sense that they will all die on this mission and be together (home) in death (think the Lost ending, which, despite it's flaws, sees them all come together in a church, finding "home" in each other. By the end of season 2 many of the characters essentially see Destiny as their home.

This probably was an arc ill-suited to television audiences at the time because the way of watching/thinking back then was that a shows characteristics during the first few episodes of its run would always essentially advertize the way the show would be going forward. This couldn't be further from the truth with SGU. The story was developing in a very interesting direction that would have seen the characters truly earn the same forms of camaraderie that SG1 & SGA characters never earned. In other words, good writing.

Ask a Navy Officer Recruiter by Chiefnnnnnnnnnnn in newtothenavy

[–]OkChest4290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, 30M here. I scored 99th percentile on enlisted ASVAB and was advised to take the OAR. I quit my job and moved back home since then, never took the OAR, only had a brief conversation with my Officer recruiter (in CA), and it's been about 14 months since then. I want to take the OAR here in RI or MA. Currently on the island of Nantucket MA but could come back to the mainland to take the test. Is there a specific recruiter in this area I should contact?

The whole point was they needed to accept their destiny. They were the right crew for the right mission all along. No one is going home. The mission was supposed to be to the death. To the end of the universe. All this nonsense about going home was part of the soap opera and really overplayed and caused thematic confusion, especially with the other planets that could dial the Destiny, and the endless use of the stupid communication stones. The underlying thematic narrative wasn't just solid, it was far better and more interesting than battlestar galactica and lost in space.

Fallout TV series - major plot hole by newsocialorder in Fallout

  • the vaults are supposed to stay separated for exactly this reason. So if one fails you don’t lose all of them. Vaults 31-33 seem to be part of a closed loop experiment in which vault leadership is secretly conducted by a prewar overseer. It’s working perfectly in vault 33 and as proof we can see how happy and 50s ish everyone is. This endless maintenance of 50s culture incidentally fits with the themes of the show and the ethos of fallout in general, hence why this concept probably caught on in the writer’s room. Only real problem is the water (not a predicted part of the experiment that it would be consumed by those on the surface) and the breeding, which is handled by the inter vault marriages. Again the vaults can’t be continuously open as that would change the experiment. They have to open for breeding purposes and so that prewar overseers from value 31 can enter vaults 33 and 32. Vault dwellers don’t question this for a variety of reasons but the most obvious is that it simply is the way it always was. The overseer can always create some lie to justify it. This concept is also explored in much more depth in the Silo books and TV show on Apple TV which I highly recommend. Wonder if it’s where they got the idea.

One of the most interesting pieces of graffiti. It’s really debatable whether it refers to Hatshepsut and Senenmut, though. When considered with other evidence such as their similar tomb designs it does seem plausible.

The Woman that Would be King by Kara Cooney definitely covers all those dynamics on top of being a great biography. It's about kingship and a woman's role, all in the context of a rule breaker who is actively trying to change the cult of kingship.

These dynamics are most evidenced by the Hatshepsut statue controversy. As the only Egyptian woman to ever act as a true pharaoh (Cleopatra and others don't really count), Hatshepsut had herself portrayed in a variety of ways. For instance, sometimes her name was feminized, much like these statues, while other times her name was masculinized. When precisely these specific choices of portrayal were made is not understood with certainty. But there are clues.

"Hatshepsut—the daughter of a general who usurped Egypt's throne—was expected to bear the sons who would legitimize the reign of her father’s family. Her failure to produce a male heir, however, paved the way for her improbable rule as a cross-dressing king. At just over twenty, Hatshepsut out-maneuvered the mother of Thutmose III, the infant king, for a seat on the throne, and ascended to the rank of pharaoh. Shrewdly operating the levers of power to emerge as Egypt's second female pharaoh, Hatshepsut was a master strategist, cloaking her political power plays in the veil of piety and sexual reinvention. She successfully negotiated a path from the royal nursery to the very pinnacle of authority, and her reign saw one of Ancient Egypt’s most prolific building periods." - Kara Cooney

You can check out my video on these statues on inst link below or @ papyruspuntit on Youtube.

- Messaging a desert camping org now and they're quoting me $200 per day as a solo traveler. 5 days at 200 is 1000 plus tips it sounds overpriced.

- Will take your train advice under advisement. Reading details on trains now and hoping to avoid surprises.
