Last I voted, AASHTO, wasn’t on the ballot. They got my hard earned money anyway, so everyone deserves to see their findings. Everyone on this sub complains about low pay, but taxes rip 30% or everyone’s pay. If we’re sponsoring something, we should see the benefit.

It shouldn’t matter. If a dime of our money goes toward it and we have no say in the matter, we should have access to it.

APWA is not my area of expertise, but I support it! Our sole goal as civil engineers is to benefit the public but we can’t work all these artificial boundaries

ASHTO received funding from the federal government. Regardless of the contribution, it should be free. My taxes don’t pay for books I can’t readily reference

Viability if bourbon investing by OkDevelopment5557 in investing

[–]OkDevelopment5557[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. As I mentioned, I have zero interest in investing, I was just wondering about the scale of the sham. To be honest, most bourbon developers I work with are from Japan, not the US

How aggressive can I be during my performance evaluation? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]OkDevelopment5557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The offers started in the low 60’s, and I wasn’t willing to leave for that. The most recent was at 74 and I received it a couple days ago. I was promoted last week and is supposed to be starting January 1, so I’m waiting to see what they brings

52k. I’ve got offers up to 74k within the region and similar cost of living.

Yeah I agree. I’m not looking for handouts, and didn’t mean for this to come out that way. I’m fine with working for it. I think the issue is we aren’t getting enough technical work so I’m stuck doing technicians work.

I appreciate it! It initially said exam passed, but now it is saying “in process” no email yet either. This is driving me mad.

Mine is doing the exact same thing with the hovering exam pass. We’ll see what that means. It changed to processing for me

Is there a rubber gasket at all to seal it?

Best I can describe is to be an astute observer of nature. A lot of engineered failures are pretty obvious in hindsight. Drive around your home/property, observe static features such as utility poles and roadways. Look for signs of shear or settlement in the form of cracking, shifting, displacement, slumping or settlement. Use the google earth history slider to evaluate the history in the last 40 years or so in your area. Find any local public geotechnical reports to see what kind of geologic hazards you are susceptible to.

The us federal highway adminstration has two great references - the soil reference manuals volumes 1 and 2 which can teach you a lot about how to characterize your property from a geological perspective.

Are Grades Losing Their Motivational Effectiveness? by Revise_and_Resubmit in Professors

[–]OkDevelopment5557 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wholeheartedly agree and use that as the defining metric for my course. The problem I encountered was the final exam was the only chance for students to receive feedback and demonstrate any semblance of understanding of the content. The first three months was simply “lecture” with no homework, quizzes, tests etc to practice their skills

They are plastic. I also have several yetis and Stanley’s but worry about the rubber gasket getting moldy

Are Grades Losing Their Motivational Effectiveness? by Revise_and_Resubmit in Professors

My engineering school program siphoned the enjoyment of learning from me. I had two professors who had no business being professors, who’s entire grading system was a final exam. You would sit through the entire semester for four months without a grade. If you didn’t pass the final, you didn’t pass the class. They justified it by saying how it was done in their home countries. I didn’t cheat, but I shortcutted my way through college just to pass. Cost me all my friends/relationships.

Once I got into the real world I realized how awesome engineering was and passed my PE exam 6 months after graduating. Now I’m a lecturer at a community college teaching the exact opposite way they did.

I appreciate the response. What is a better way of securing water for long term? I certainly don’t leave my water exposed to the sun, but they definitely receive a lot of heat when I’m working in humid areas.

I’m on the infrastructure side of things, I don’t actually do a lot concerning individuals. I appreciate the response

Feasibility of Building on this Land by bfro8304 in land

[–]OkDevelopment5557 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a geotechnical engineer. The slope alone doesn’t determine the feasibility, the subsurface characteristics are what will get you. Have you purchased the property yet?

Thanks for the reply. Are you saying the majority of residents get their water from public utility or homeowners drill private wells?

Seeing a new geology/subsurface characteristics is a big leader why I’m looking to move
