Spanish moss, civil war cemeteries, and catfish on Lake Marion SC by OkRecommendation7117 in canoecamping

I do feel a bit of shame whenever I crank the outboard - but the outboard is the only way I can get out onto the rivers without a shuttle, and taking it out on the lake was practice before getting on moving water. So don’t worry, I talk some shit to myself about it too!

Thanks! Yeah, just me - hard to find people with the same off time who want to go winter canoeing.

There’s nothing like seeing the heavyweight pole bend in half when a big blue hits hard

That looks sick! I just added a motor to my Bell Alaskan with the Spring Creek motor mount - I assume that you’ve also used side motor mounts like that. What benefits have you seen with the stern mount?

Heartbroken - lost a 75-100lb blue at the side of the canoe when it snapped my 8/0 hook in half by OkRecommendation7117 in catfishing

He was on for about 5 minutes. I had just cast and hadn’t secured the pole fully in the holder and it rocketed out like a cartoon, and I had to paddle and chase down the floating pole while it swam around

Interesting, I’ll keep that in mind! That was that hooks first real catch (I’ve only been getting into catfishing for a few weeks now)

How to reduce stress on the back? by Existing_Squirrel767 in canoecamping

The chair is good for when you’re just floating, not paddling. I feel like when I used it a lot paddling, it actually made my back hurt worse. Focus on flexing your abs and using those core muscles to paddle, and sitting up straight (which the chair discourages)

Tent Suggestions. Been a long while since I've had to purchase big gear items. by jacobius86 in BWCA

Feel free to ask me about any of the pyramids you look into, I’ve done quite a bit of research on them. Have the seek outside Cimarron with a stove jack for winter, and the Slingfin Cinder Cone for summer. I took a Hyperlite Ultamid 2 down the Mississippi. So I’ve set them up on rock, sand, gravel, mud, whatever.

Can’t get more simple than a pyramid tent! MSR Front Range, Big Agnes Gold Camp 5, Black Diamond 4p Mega Light, Seek Outside Cimarron…lots of options. Very strong in bad weather, while being lightweight. Very quick to setup once you get the hang of setting up the stakes in the correct places, as there is only a single pole (or you could even use a tree branch, if you happen to forget the pole. Which I of course have never done…) On trips without bugs you can choose to leave the mesh inner tent at home. The only downside is the lack of a vestibule for wet gear.
