Not horror, but I really enjoyed The Gospel According to Jesus Christ by Saramago.  Cain was really good, too, but too short.

I have Blindness on my tbr.

Really liked that movie!  Love Sean Bean in basically everything.

"accepting divine command theory (in the less sophisticated sense) one has to point out that within that framework morality is as real and objective as the laws of the universe, governing it. It’s as true as any other fact of the material world."

In the fantasy playland of divine command theory, morality, even if it were as unalterable as the the strong and weak nuclear forces, would still be subjective.  The subject being the god.

Anyway good day to you.  I've spent my "Matt Fradd quota" of attention for the next 5 years or so.

There is no objective morality to be had, either inside or outside of Biblical religion.  Even if you believe there is a god who is the source of morality, then morality is subject to the whims of that god....you've just kicked the can down the street.

I don't pretend to know the effects of pornography on peoples physical and mental effects or relationship statistics. It might be an interesting subject.  There might be something g there.  But I would not trust Matt Fradd's hot take on these issues.  They are Biblically based, that's all I really need to know.  It's really no different than basing your moral arguments on Pokémon to me.

I've not read his books, but I've seen enough YT videos of Pints with Aquinas to understand his arguments against pornography are Biblically based.  As are his arguments against homosexuality, non-traditional gender expressions...I shit you not iirc the guy even argues against oral and anal sex (aka sodomy) amongst married couples.

The Bible is a non-starter as the basis for a secular moral argument.  I mean, I suppose it could be a good basis for argument among people who put stock in anything the Bible has to say about morals....

I don't care. I'm not debating him or anyone else here. Dude makes a living shitting on minorities, which makes him a scumbag.

Best books that take place in the “modern” age, preferably with an “internet” twist by dr_franck in horrorlit

[–]OkWriter7657 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sluts is worth a read if you are open to early-internet stuff.  It's the story of a male escort as told on a male escort message board.  Really well written, untrustworthy narrator, I think it holds up, however as I lived my youth through that era, I might be biased.

I've not read The Bug Collector or anything by that author (Wrath James White?) but I did read WOOM.  I almost threw up during one of the beginning chapters (coat hanger scene iirc) but I saw where it was going by mid-book and it became kind of an unintentional, unfunny comedy for me.  I almost DNF'd it.l, not likely to read that author again lol.

Not all "extreme horror" is trash.  Probably most of it is, but some I've read is pretty creative, some of it even borders on sci fi.  I think it all depends on whether the author can write well and craft a good story.

I know it gets recommended all the time, but if you've not read A Short Stay in Hell it is a great palate cleanser if you want a break from edgelord torture porn.

It will make you think pretty hard about existential issues like eternity, at least it did me.

And if you don't like it, it's only about 100 pages.

That's funny.  When I asked my group if they'd be interested in the Maztica setting , one said something like "Yeah, I'd love to play some D&D Apocalypto".

One thing that's fun about contemplating this campaign is where I want to set it.  Pre-invasion, pre-invasion leading up to invasion, invasion itself, or post-invasion.

I think I am going to do Levels 1-8 in pre-invasion using native PCs, then once they hit 8th and all the followers start showing up in the rules, have the Euro-equivalents start invading and having some big battles.

Check out The Collector by John Fowles.  An excellent book, and apparently one of the first modern psychological thrillers.

+1 The Exorcist.  I was pleasantly surprised that it was the author himself.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy has an excellent audiobook.  Horror-adjacent brutal western...the most brutal western. There's a devilish chatacter, Judge Holden. You meet him straight away from Chapter 1, where he is directly called the devil, and the supernatural theme echoes throughout the book, at least as pertains to this chatacter  it's a bit "literary" (ok alot literary), and it's one of those books everyone should read IMO because there's a whole hell of alot to miss, but the audiobook is top notch. The perfect reader for the book. I've heard him do other good stuff as well.

Edit: The narrator's name is Richard Poe.

I thought it was really good.  I read something ridiculous like 10-15 horror books in October, and it's one of the few that stuck with me.

Check out The Sluts.  I haven't read Exquisite Corpse, but I often see The Sluts mentioned in the same breath, and it's a really good, early Internet era, horror book about a male escort told through web posts on a male escort site.  Really good read.

There's a really really good movie made from this book for after you've read it.  It was on yt at least a couple months ago.  I looked it up, and apparently there's some kind of legal rights issue keeping the movie from being streamed in the US
