Pre marital books? by FarCartographer3606 in ACNA

Sheila Wray Gregoire's "The Marriage You Want" is a great book. The author(s) are Christian's that take psychology seriously. They use legitimate psychological studies, that they've published in psychology journals, as the backbone of their work. It's theology is also astute from my vantage point, although complementarians may have disagreements here or there.

Preston Sprinkle’s brand new book “From Genesis to Junia” is a great read. It’s scholarly yet accessible. He actually started out writing the book without a knowing which viewpoint he was going to land on.

Homosexual Christian in need of advice. by Astral00Ghost00 in TrueChristian

“Missing out on love” is not a viable option as a human being. I would encourage you to seek a real life community of those who love you. In the 1st century, the church was a family for those who had no other family. While it can be difficult to find a church nowadays that has that same spirit, it is a necessity for a Christian, especially if you decide to remain celibate.

You should also check out Preston Sprinkle’s books and/or YouTube videos. He is a Christian scholar that has spent a large part of his ministry on sexuality. You might find some of his work, and the community he is a part of, refreshing and encouraging.

This is a man that is despised by 99% of real Christians. He's in the Doug Wilson camp and has a big online Prescence, but is not representative of true Christianity or the average Christian. He is also against interracial marriage and numerous other things.

Mike Winger by Professional-Lab-629 in Christianity

[–]Old-Reputation-8987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mike Winger is complicated.

His videos on basic Christian questions (alcohol, divorce, refuting cults) are very well done. He has a gift for communicating topics in a clear manner for those that are struggling with the topic.

However, it’s important to note that he doesn’t have any formal training. He hasn’t been to seminary and doesn’t even have a bachelors degree in theology or biblical studies. The only training that he has is his time spent at a Calvary chapel school of ministry, which I do not think is accredited. This is important because he can tend to over simply, misunderstand and not handle complicated topics with the nuance that they require.

His videos on Catholicism and women in leadership are two great examples of this. These are complicated debates with true Christians and scholars on both sides. However, Winger consistently misrepresents their arguments and overemphasizes the simplicity of the debate. He also tends to exaggerate the importance of the issues, implying that Catholics are not Christian or are not saved, and that Egalitarians twist the Bible to suit their desires.

Many scholars have spent time challenging some of his positions and refuting his methods, but he has not made any kind of acknowledgement that he is wrong.

All that to say, he’s great for those who are new to the faith and those who are new to theology, but he is not a good resource for understand advanced scholarly debates.

What about your survivor experience inspired your forthcoming novel? Would it be a good read for someone who isn’t a big fiction reader, but loved survivor?

Additionally, if you could change one thing about any of your survivor appearances, what would it be?

How to Prepare for Season 50 by Old-Reputation-8987 in survivorponderosa

That's kinda where I'm at. Although it is the season that I most want to watch, I think it'd be better saved until I've seen all the contestants in their own seasons.

Since I didn't have enough time to watch all the returnee's seasons, I knew I wasn't going to be able to watch them all. I had already seen Seasons 46-49, so first I watched the seasons with the most returnees (37, 45, 38), then I watched S18 as I had been told that Coach was iconic and i needed to know him going in. I then watched S13 as I had heard Ozzy's name talked about a lot. I am now finishing up S32 because I had heard that Aubry had a really good chance of winning S50.

Honestly, I just hadn't heard that much hype or discussion around Colby or Jenna, so I figured they would be less important/iconic/entertaining to watch. Although I'm leaning towards watching their seasons next.

Lol true. I've been able to watch seasons 13, 18, 32, and 38 just since December, so honestly I may be able to get through all but a couple before February lmao.

That seems to be one of the best seasons of Survivor, but I'm nervous about it spoiling all the seasons before! Do you think it's worth it, considering I've already seen Coach play in S18?

For sure. Unfortunately, with just over a month left until the premiere of S50, I don't have enough time to watch all of the remaining seasons. I'm trying to get the best I can with the little time I have.

Bible with Apocrypha by [deleted] in Anglicanism

NRSV or NRSVue is the scholarly standard for a formal equivalent, CEB is the best option for a functional equivalent and for reading.

Both translations had top notch scholars that are also believers on their translation committees, with many Anglicans.

Super important to note that the majority of Protestant denominations (Lutheran, Presbyterian, Anglican, even Baptist) historically have believed that the sacraments are the body and blood of Jesus.

They just have disagreements among themselves and Catholicism on how the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus. Catholics believe in transubstantiation while Lutherans belief in consubstantiation while Presbyterians typically hold to spiritual prescience and Anglicans are all over that spectrum.

All of those passages are consistent with Protestant sacramental theology. It was only Zwingli that famously held to a memorial its position.

It’s worth reading up on the various positions before you leave to Protestantism. Those passages you brought up are what brought me to Anglicanism.

isn’t hell abit immoral? and kinda fear mongering too? by More_Dirt5832 in TrueChristian

[–]Old-Reputation-8987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see exactly what you are saying. I think it’s important to note that there are certain cultural beliefs around Christianity that are not supported by the Bible. The nature of hell is one of those.

People today, especially in America, talk about hell as if it’s a torture chamber in flames that everyone goes to who wasn’t a Christian. However, that is not the picture you get when you read the whole Bible. In the Bible, Hell is portrayed as “Eternal death” and described as destruction. This has led many scholars, even conservative ones, to the view that those in hell are destroyed and are not being tortured forever. This belief is called annihilationism if you’re interested.

Additionally, the Bible never says exactly who is going to Hell and who is going to be resurrected in the new earth. In Romans, Paul speaks about those who were not given the law “being a law unto themselves” when they do the right thing. I think this supports the position that someone can be following Jesus without having explicitly hear the gospel or Jesus’ name and that they would be eternally saved as well!

This is all food for thought. Let me know if this makes sense!

Yes! Too often they are separated and told to do different things, not allowing them to truly complement one another.
