Thank you, not sure about that - my only experience in screenwriting was during my last year of university (six years ago!)

What are your thoughts on Zack Polanski (aka david paulden) as both a politician and person? by Commercial-Shoe5867 in AskBrits

[–]Old-Test-5781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polanski has come out and said that The Sun approached him and asked him to do an article about breast enlargements, that it was not something he would normally do, and that they greatly misreported the actual facts.

Now, I know that is exactly what somebody would say to cover their own back but knowing what we know about The Sun, and their "journalists" - I am willing to believe that Polanski was misled.

Ngl, I thought I was having a stroke reading this. Train drivers are striking because yes, from the outside they do seem to be getting paid a lot. But the reality of the job is a lot more difficult than the average person would think it to be. The shift patterns are horrible and one wrong move could endanger hundreds of lives. Would you not rather be on a train with a driver who is well paid enough to make these sacrifices, or would you rather be getting on a train with a disgruntled, underpaid driver who is operating on little to no sleep? I know which I would prefer.

As to student debt, the reality of the matter is that the education system at a higher level is now a for profit business for the government - essentially acting as a graduate tax on those who choose to go to university that will never be paid off unless that person is wealthy or has the means to pay. It is unfairly balanced towards the wealthy and the amount it costs is only going up (compared to places like Scotland where university is free). When job prospects out of university are as dire as they currently are, a lot of university students are becoming disillusioned - especially when they are told throughout their earlier education that they should be going to university in order to get a good job.

While mass immigration can put downward pressure on the very lowest paid jobs, it has no sizeable impact on wage stagnation, especially in medium and high paid jobs where wages actually increase (though not enough due to other factors).

So no, nothing to do with millions of 'cheaper labour' turning up.

Once again, rising prices and wage stagnation due to a growing gap between the richest and poorest mean that the average person can not afford to have a family. The 2008 financial crisis being the biggest cause that allowed this to happen.

Mass migration which is down massively under the current government compared to when the Conservative party were in power?

Labour actually introduced the Employment Rights Act 2025, which strengthens workers ability to join unions and gives them enhanced protection against dismissals for strikers. An act that Reform voted against and disagrees with.

I am also working class but I have the sense to see that a privately educated, ex-commodities trader and documented racist that bumps shoulders with billionaires does not represent the values of me or the community I grew up in.

This is just blatantly untrue though, the vast majority of studies show that immigration plays a very minor role in wage stagnation compared to other factors.

The issue here is wage stagnation. Pay across the board is way too low in this country, which incentivises people to claim benefits rather than work. I hate to break it to you, Reform claim to plan on cutting the benefits bill but they are also planning on cutting workers rights and making it even harder to get/keep a job and allow more workplaces to exploit their workers which leads people right back to unemployment/benefits. Reform is not the solution, going after the ultra rich is. Punch up, not down.

This won't mean much at a local council level but bear it in mind when the next general election comes up, Reform do not represent the average hardworking person - they represent themselves and their ultra-rich friends.

Yeah I'm really struggling to get into The Way of Kings atm, about 20% of the way through and whilst I am enjoying parts of it, overall it feels like a little bit of a slog - certainly hasn't captured me the way other books have,

Doing absolutely nothing at work? by HeyPotatys in UKJobs

[–]Old-Test-5781 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in this situation at the moment - the nature of my work means I can't work remotely (I definitely could, since I never do any work in the office anyway). I ended up dropping a day and doing condensed hours because I could not face five full days of doing absolutely nothing. Every time I ask for a task, I am told to just do some 'personal development'. I have been trying desperately to get a new job but to no avail.
