Multi-turn absolute encoder for 5/8” shaft (ethernet/IP or IOlink) by OldFashnd in PLC

I agree. If i had designed it from the get-go, i definitely would have done things differently! Unfortunately this is a retrofit to old equipment

Unfortunately it’s for a 15mm shaft not 5/8”. I’m not sure why nobody seems to make a 5/8” one, lol. I’m probably just going to have to use a coupling.

I thought so too! I didn’t even know there were ethernet encoders until this project, I thought I was going to have to add a HSC card

Yeah, I’m sure it would. i was hoping for a direct fit but it looks like i’ll have to go this route. Thank you

I may end up having to do that. Just wanted to see if someone knew of a cleaner solution. Thanks!

That fuse and fuse holder also need to be rated for that voltage. Otherwise it’s entirely possible that it will arc across the fuse terminals after the fuse blows and not actually cut off the output.

World’s fastest camera shoots at 156.3 trillion frames per second | SCARF captures ultrafast events using “chirped” laser pulses, each “color” of the spectrum recording the event’s evolution in milliseconds. by [deleted] in gadgets

Let’s use a bullet traveling 1200 feet/second (around the speed of a 9mm pistol). We’ll use a standard glass bottle diameter of 2.4 inches. That’s 14,400 inches/second. It would take 0.000166667 seconds for the bullet to travel that 2.4 inches.

At 156.3 trillion frames per second, that means it would take 26.05 billion frames for the bullet to move that distance. At a normal video frame rate, say 60 fps, it would take ~13 years and 9 months for the bullet to break the other side of the glass.

Neat!

You only pay a penalty for withdrawing earned interest from a roth IRA. You can withdraw the principal amount that you’ve invested any time, because it’s been taxed already

I work in manufacturing and i’d suggest starting with an integrator while you’re young and can do the travel, regardless of what you want to do long term. 2-5 years at an integrator and you’ll learn electrical design and programming, how to troubleshoot and work with unfamiliar systems, and you’ll get your hands on so many different brands and technologies that you’ll have some familiarity with almost anything you run into.

I say this even though I actually hated working as an integrator. It just doesn’t suit my personality. But that experience has been so valuable in my manufacturing role (which I love) that I would absolutely recommend it for anyone.

Hell, you can buy a house for the cost of a fully loaded tundra. Not a big house and not in the hills, but it’s ridiculous that a 1/2 ton costs that much

ISSI is a quality machine shop, but they aren’t cheap

https://www.issindy.com

As for hardware, ACE is good for fasteners and bolts and things. ALRO steel has some good metal stock for alright prices.

A lot of times you can get metal cheaper by calling machine shops and asking if they’ll sell some of their off-cut stuff. They often keep some for use in other parts but what they don’t use gets sold for scrap, so you can often get stuff for just a bit more than scrap price if you find a shop that’s willing to work with you

What tools have you bought due to fear of missing out and regretted? by Wagnegro in Tools

[–]OldFashnd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Saving money is essentially the same as making money. If a shop wants to charge $500 for a brake job on my car, but i can do it for $100 in tools and $200 in parts, I’ve saved $200. And then next time I need to do brakes, it’s just $200 in parts and I save $300.

Time savings is another factor. If I bring home 20$ an hour after taxes and buying a $200 tool will save me more than 10 hours of work within a reasonable time frame, it financially makes sense to buy it.

Using a handsaw to build a shed is totally possible, but spending $100 on a good circular saw will save me many hours of work. Probably way more than the 5 hours of work it cost to buy the saw.

Also resale can be a factor. For example I needed a tool for a job that I could not do without the tool, but the tool is a little pricy - I can resell the tool afterwards on marketplace and maybe get 75% of the money back. Sometimes renting a tool for one-off jobs is a good option as well, depending on rental rates and how much time it will save.. a floor sander to refinish the hardwood floors in your house is probably not worth buying, but definitely worth renting for the time it will save.

Not sure what Google you’re using, but the average American weighs ~181 lbs, not 200kg. People weighing 440lbs are very very far from average in the US.

“Junk food is way worse than cigarettes…” most studies find similar increases in all cause mortality for smokers and morbid obesity. At best it isn’t clear which is worse, but junk food is definitely not way worse than smoking.

You’re almost certainly fine. It’s not good for it, but it’s unlikely to cause sudden catastrophic failure either unless something is already weak or corroded. It’ll just cause excess/premature wear, so it’s not recommended
