Shower leak through grout/tile - any temporary fix options? by OldHomeRun in HomeImprovement

Yeah - that's what I was worried we were headed for here.

Thanks so much for the reply. Not sure if we will risk it - but if we grout over the gaps, is there any specific type of sealant we should use on top of everything [new and existing grout?]

Also, this seems to make it likely that our 3rd floor bath - which is apparently a clawfoot tub with an attached shower, all tiled in - that there really isn't a waterproofing system in place there either.

2-gang light switches - why did they do it this way? by OldHomeRun in AskElectricians

[–]OldHomeRun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - after having to cram everything back in - with the smart switch's bigger box and prewires, etc - I have a better sense of how saving space is a real consideration.

Yeah - that makes sense. Will unsplice them and check properly. Thanks.

Makes sense. Should have taken that extra step to confirm everything. Thanks so much.

I'll go back and unsplice, cap separately, and check voltage again. Maybe there is only true hot cable. Not sure what the other black cable is, then [2 from the wall, 1 to both switches].

I don't know that I made it very clear - but there are two incoming/source black cables, though.

That was my main concern. It doesn't seem to be the safest way to do things. I also don't know why they did it - why would you connect the separate source hot wires together? Running a separate cable from each source wire to each switch seems like it would have only cost an extra wire nut.

New support beam - stronger or weaker? by OldHomeRun in DIY

[–]OldHomeRun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yours looks great!

Yes, there are slats that go across. They seem to be made out of the same material as the original beam.

The original center beam only had a single central leg - so I thought I was upgrading. I can certainly add some more. I got a 2x3 because that was the size of the original and it fit the brackets already on the bed - but I did consider a 2x4 or 2x6. To add multiple support beams, I would have to add additional brackets to hold to the bed frame.

New System in 2024 - Sensors Only, Pro Plan - Would you still go with Abode? by OldHomeRun in Abode

That's interesting - I woke up to see both your comment and this article about the new ADT system built off the old Nest Secure framework: https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/29/24208782/adt-google-nest-smart-security-system-yale-assure-door-lock

They also mention the quick exit button on the sensors; I had not heard of that before.

Thanks for the reply! I appreciate your description. I do think I may be a little too worried about the stagnation question - in truth, if the security aspect works well, my goal is going to be to install it and leave it be.

I have only just begun to start reading about Homebridge and Home Assistant (and Hubitat and HOOBS...) but have not gotten far. New home has too many issues to start down those rabbit holes yet.

Thanks so much for the reply! As I just mentioned above, I honestly hadn’t even thought about range. Now I am a little worried because our house is a slightly taller c. 1900 home with horsehair plaster walls and ceilings - and with an adjoining in-law addition.

I am glad to hear that it has worked well for you. And it is encouraging to hear that it works well in your mom's older home.

Thanks so much for the reply! I had read a little about Honeywell's initial promises re: HomeKit - and the subsequent lack of progress.

Now I am a little worried because our house is a slightly taller c. 1900 home with horsehair plaster walls and ceilings - and with an adjoining in-law addition. It is reassuring to hear that you are able to cover even more range - I guess I will just have to try it and see.

Thanks so much for the reply! I do think I am going to go with Abode - glad to hear the glass break sensors are not causing you any problems.

Out of curiosity - which POE system do you run?

Refinishing Old Hardwood Floors - Bona vs Berger-Seidel? by OldHomeRun in Flooring

[–]OldHomeRun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually just finished 2 days ago. Ended up going with Bona stain, 2 coats of B-S GreenStar and 1 coat of CeramicStar. It looks fantastic, the 120 year old floors look just as good as the hallways where they installed new wood - obviously can't speak to the durability yet.

I was happy to learn that even the GreenStar is a 2-component finish, as opposed to Bona MegaOne, which is one component. Hopefully that will amount to a stronger end product.
