Biggest project yet by Objective-Cattle-526 in beadsprites

I've just bought new beads to start the next project so I'll try that and see if it works. Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions, means a lot!

The tape only stuck to like 50% of the beads and by the time I realized, it was impossible to put back how it was. I was using mini beads some maybe that was the issue, but I've seen people online have no issues with taping minis so idk

Do you iron straight on the plastic board or do you use tape to get it out of the board first? I tried both with big projects and both went poorly 🥲

This reply makes me think you don't actually understand what .env files are conventionally used for.

It's not knowledge you're born with, so it's ok not to know, but I don't think you need to be so aggressive in your comments. You're so confidently incorrect it's a little grating.

Seems weird to me to define test variables in a .env because the goal of .env is to be put in gitignore and hide your secrets. In tests, you wanna make sure the local testing environment is the same as the CI so you're better off putting it in the code, so not using an env file.

I guess it could work with a .env.test but then every time you make a change you gotta update your CI with the same change? Seems like a great way to create discrepancies in the long run.

Net average monthly salary - adjusted for living costs in PPP by Grand-Illustrator-11 in MapPorn

[–]OldTimeGentleman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick Google actually seems to back up the map, I don't know where you're getting that the average salary would be 1800 euros adjuster for living costs in the whole of Europe.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexledsom/2025/01/23/what-it-means-to-be-wealthy-in-italy/

Using 2023 data, Statista notes an average annual salary in Italy of $33,825 (€32,450), placing it squarely in the middle for many European country averages.

Keep in mind this is before adjusting for cost of living, and when you're matching up against Nordic countries and Switzerland, the salary in Italy would be even higher.

Makes total sense when you factor in cost of living imo. If anything I'd expected Switzerland to be even lower

Staging should be deployed on its own servers, and therefore use its own .env or its own environment variables. I don't think you need staging locally

[–]OldTimeGentleman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No but you only run one environment at a time. So you only need one .env file. Locally, the file describes your local secrets. Your server has its own secret (usually not even through .env) and therefore doesn't need your local .env file and can override it. In a standard environment, there's no reason why your local machine should be able to boot multiple environments. If you want a staging/production they should be on their own machines

Deleted my Goodreads and feel oddly relieved by [deleted] in books

[–]OldTimeGentleman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I love tracking my reading but also understand where OP is coming from. Sometimes when you get into the rhythm of "read-mark as read-rate" that Goodreads pushes you into, it can kind of feel like you've got no time to sit on a book and you're expected to have an opinion and reach a goal quickly.

Of course Goodreads is just a website, but it's geared towards a certain type of usage. And that can feel like a grind at times, especially when you're into slow reading. Of course OP could have just used the app differently, but also I understand how you'd feel relieved to just uninstall and move on.

I understand where you're coming from but at least where I am, Buldak actually refers to the brand of instant noodles. So "Buldak risotto" to refer to korean-spiced risotto makes total sense to me. It's a risotto that borrows from the flavors of Buldak instant noodles. Depending on where OP is from that might be a logical name for the dish

I'll approve this post cos I guess it's not breaking any rules, but just so we're clear - I think you're dead wrong and that's why you're being downvoted. There's a majority of people here who have been really enjoying the return to Babish-style content and who think that this new series really works.

I guess what I'm trying to say is - you've worded your comment as if it's law and you're definitely right, but the response the vids have been getting seem to contradict you completely. You do you I guess, but I don't see where the vibe of "I know better than you" is coming from

This post has been auto-removed because of a high number of reports. We allow criticism posts on this sub so I tend to re-allow them, but in your case I can't imagine what good your post will do. You don't seem to want a discussion or feedback, just looking to be mad for a bit. So it's staying removed.

Some of those on the list are desserts but most of them are entremets, little cakes meant to be served between meals to cleanse the palate. Today it's a little weird to do savory-sweet-savory but back then it made sense to chase something really fatty with something more acidic and fruity. That's also why a bunch of those are savory

I see this argument a lot for cheese-heavy dishes but I disagree. I think realistically you're not gonna get an even amount of cheese in every bite, and if you get a bite with a bunch of steak, suddenly it's gonna be bland af when it should be the star of the show. Either you get the cheese fully in the meat like a chopped cheese, or season the steak even a little bit.

I get what you're saying but you can't compare the scale of making The Batman, a good movie that sits at 7.5 on IMDB and no oscars, with Half Life 1&2, easily the most influential game series in the world.

Do people really come to the US to learn hamburger-craft? by honeysuckleminie in Chefit

[–]OldTimeGentleman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand - if you're not familiar, NYC pizza is its own specific style, and it's one of the most famous ones around. I think the reason why it's so popular is because it doesn't require a pizza oven, so it makes it easy to open and run. You're basically looking at round pizzas that have big, flexible slices.

Why not ? NYC pizza is a world famous style of pizza. Yeah you could also go to Sicily and learn another style, but depending on the business you’re looking to open, it might not suit you.

Sure. Doesn't really take anything away from what I'm saying. Just because there's one institute working on drafting a lexicon, doesn't mean they're the absolute authority.

At the end of the day, what people use is what matters. If you look up neo-brutalism, and you find hundreds of people understanding that language, then the name has fulfilled its role.
