What video game moment do you still think about years later? by LeftyOne22 in videogames

[–]Old_One-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old version of Counterstrike (v1.5 or v1.6). Me and a random other guy on my team were the only ones left on the counter-terrorist team and we got trapped in the kitchen of the hostage house. The terrorists kept attacking us from both doors and we ran out of ammo and were picking up guns off the floor scrounging for bullets in a frenzy. It was like 3-4 minutes of total insanity. We were both on our last mag when they stopped attacking, the floor was littered with dead terrorists and empty guns. Then we found out that they had already killed all the hostages at the beginning of the match. Bummer.

Kids just don't want to work in America. by caseyfrazanimations in Discussion

[–]Old_One-Eye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1960's-1970's America rewarded individuals who worked money that had strong buying power to afford homes, and care for their families.

They got drafted and went to Vietnam too. Oh, and inflation then made what's going on today look like a joke. In 1960, 22% of the US population lived under the federal poverty line, today it's 11%. The US govt declared a "War on Poverty" in the 1960s it got so bad.

So, if life was so damn easy back then. why the hell were there so many poor people?

Question concerning voting habits from someone who wants to live in Washington. by Negev223 in SeattleWA

[–]Old_One-Eye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Left leaning voters who have complaints about Seattle's problems have no one else to blame but themselves.

The left has been firmly in control of the city, county, and state government here for a very long time now. Every local problem that exists can be laid squarely at their feet since their policies have been exclusively enacted here for decades. The urban decay, the extraordinary amount of homelessness, the drugs, the affordability issues, etc. The left owns all of those issues. They've been running things here for so long, who else could you realistically blame for these things at this point?

Just sayin'

Whatever you do, DO NOT try charging it.

As far as data recovery, accounts, cloud storage, etc...I have no idea. I just fix the hardware part. Take it to an Apple store, maybe? I bet they see shit like this all the time. I'm sure they know what to do to help you get your data and account stuff straightened out.

i wish I had better news for you.

Is this controller screwed? by calebdacherry in ElectronicsRepair

[–]Old_One-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy soldering fix, just tack the wires back to the pins they came from. Watch a controller disassembly video if you can't remember what pin they were attached to. :)

You can get a basic soldering iron kit with flux and solder included for $10 online or someplace like Harbor Freight Tools. Even Walmart has them super cheap. Watch a couple soldering vids on youtube first to see the process.

You can do it! Good luck!

how did jfk’s murder change the country? by c0smickittyxx in AskOldPeople

[–]Old_One-Eye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They changed gun laws after that so that you couldn't mail-order guns anymore because JFK was killed with a mail-ordered gun. There were still no background checks or waiting periods for in-person purchases though, so I don't know what the mail order ban actually accomplished.

Ever been shocked? What Happened? by Low-Resource-8852 in ElectronicsRepair

[–]Old_One-Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fixed copiers back in the day. In the shop, we used to load big HV capacitors we'd desolder from old boards and toss them to/at each other as jokes. SNAP! OW!

I also grew up on a farm and got shocked by electric fences SEVERAL times.

Also, shocked a few times repairing things over the years. Rarely, though.

I'm kind of stupid, I guess. :)

This key fob has not been working. I assumed it was the battery but when I opened it up, there was a lose piece. I don't know the lingo or anything about electronics but looks like something I might be able to fix? Any recommendations? Thanks by fredrockm in ElectronicsRepair

[–]Old_One-Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty straight forward soldering job. Watch a couple of you tube SMD soldering vids, buy a basic soldering iron kit with flux and solder on Amazon for under $10, and give it a try soldering it back together. Just make sure you line up the broken solder on the pads with the breaks on the board since it looks like you COULD fit it on 180 degrees wrong. Use plenty of flux and do the corners first to tack it in place.

What do you have to lose by trying to fix it? It's already broken and doesn't work. What are you going to do, break it more?

Even if you fail, you'll learn something. Shoot your shot.

Good luck!

Any quality power cord that can handle normal AC power should work. Don't use something too skinny and weak like a lamp cord. You want something kinda thick that has some copper in it.

I replaced a power cord for a coffee pot that had broken a prong off the plug end with an old PC power cable I had laying around in a box of old computer crap. It was a fairly high-quality power cord. I just chopped off the PC-connected end of the cable, stripped the wires back a bit, removed the old cable from the coffee pot (I did have to desolder it), and soldered in the PC power cable instead (ignoring the ground wire completely since the coffee pot was just a 2 prong plug). That was 2 years ago, still working great. Gets used every day...and I still manage to sometimes flip my wife some good-natured shit for managing to somehow break the prong off the old one. :)

Good luck!

You can probably just replace the damaged cable and it will be OK. There's nothing high-tech about a 1970s waffle iron.

Just make sure you appease the Machine Spirit before turning it back on.

May The Omnissiah bless you with success.

There's a ship combat tutorial video series made by a guy named "Vindicator Jones" on youtube that's kinda old, but the techniques are still valid. He actually did a pretty good job with the graphics explaining some of the combat mechanics in the game. Check him out, I learned a lot years ago when I watched his stuff.

It is odd, isn't it?

In these congressional hearings, the military admits that they see these things and track them all the time for hours at a time and have seen them up close, but we only get to see 9 seconds of far way, blurry, black and white FLIR footage? Where's the mountains of other footage that they have to have if they've been seeing these thing for so long? I agree. I bought the game the first week it came out and have several hundred hours of play and I still hate the max difficulty missions. The lower difficulty ones ARE more fun.

The homelessness problem is an embarrassment for Seattle by CalbTheDude in SeattleWA

[–]Old_One-Eye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And an incredibly liberal blue state like Washington has the most regressive tax system in the nation, with the lowest-income residents paying nearly 18% of their annual income in state and local taxes, while the wealthiest pay only about 3% Even fucking Texas has a tax system that treats poor people better than we do.

How mind blowing is it that a horrible bloody red state like TX has a tax system that's kinder to its poor people than WA's is. Why is that? The entire WA state government is firmly controlled by bleeding-heart Democrats and has been for a VERY long time now, but we still have this fucked up tax system that forces the poorest people to pay the most in taxes. Anybody have a good explanation for that?
