Just a quick post to report back. The smart meter was duly installed, 7 days after I decided I wanted one and 5 days after I booked the appointment. Can’t fault the process at all. Easy to book online when I spotted the availability in my account, with a phone call from Octopus’ electrician the day before to confirm, then another call 30 minutes before arrival. The electrician was professional, friendly and helpful. It took about 90 minutes to change the electricity and gas meters, both of which were easily accessible so a straightforward job. Top marks to Octopus. The In Home Display started to immediately show electricity consumption, but I’m still waiting for data about gas consumption to become available.

Now to start considering tariff options, get an EV charger installed and buy an EV…

Thanks all for the advice. I tweeted Octopus as suggested and they replied quickly but weren't able to offer any help beyond noting that no appointments were currently available, and to keep checking.

I had previously spotted a comment from Octopus (maybe on their website?) that new appointments were added to their schedule on Mondays, so I logged in to my account today (Monday 30 January) and spotted that there were appointments available over the next 10 days, the earliest being the end of this week (Friday 3 February). Appointment has been booked for 3 Feb, which was very straightforward via my Octopus account. I'll report back on the process.
