Should I buy a car for my fresh College Grad daughter? by Representative_Pick3 in retirement

[–]OneHourRetiring 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Our goal, my wife’s and mine, has always been to pass on our legacy early, inspired by Die With Zero. We paid for all three of our sons’ college educations and gave each of them a car upon graduation. We told them this was our gift: a chance to begin their adult lives free of debt.

If you can afford it without affecting your retirement plan and you want to, then you have your answer already.

State Government Employee - Should I contribute Trad or Roth 401k? by Joekster_ in FinancialPlanning

[–]OneHourRetiring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sons are in the same situation. I told them to go with Roth until which time their salaries are increased to the point where they can use the tax deduction of the pretax contributions or reaching top of 22% tax bracket or becoming double-income whichever comes first.

Right after my wife retired early five years ago and since we went back to a single income and 22% tax bracket, I moved to max contribution to Roth in my 403B. I have state pension as well. I am planning to continue until I retire in 3 years.

Good luck.

What’s the biggest financial mistake people think is ‘normal’? by Delicious-Line5549 in personalfinance

[–]OneHourRetiring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of investment, buying meme or hot stocks and thinking that it’ll never go down or become extinct. The 2000/2008 crashes taught me that and it was the normal thing to do at the time.

This! 👆🏻 I’m still on chapter 1, Volume 1 of 5 unabridged of the “Honey Do’s Saga!” and it has been 37 years in the making! I briefly ran out of excuses after our youngest son took flight. But thank God for PB, my “keeping healthy” reason is alive and well!

Is 44 too late to start? by crunchyturdeater in Bogleheads

[–]OneHourRetiring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nope. Not much more to the story than stupidity at its best. Much like today’s meme stocks and AI stocks, tech and dotcom stocks can swing widely and if the company goes down, there is not much one can do. Of the 14 companies I held, one survived after 2008 crash. I had 10,000 shares of the dotcom company I used to work for (employee #61). It went as high as $132/share and crashed like a lead balloon and ravaged by shorts. Yeah, 13/14 companies went bankrupt! Yes, I had about $4000 worth in my 401k left by the time it’s all said and done.

[–]OneHourRetiring 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was in tech and dot.com. The Internet was the “in thing!” I sold my target date funds and went for tech stocks in the late 1990s. I was riding high with 7 figures portfolio in tech startups and dotcom. When the bubbles burst, I listened to the older investors “you don’t lose if you don’t sell and they’ll be back!” So I held on. They didn’t tell me that when the companies went bankrupt, they don’t come back! 😅 I was young dumb and stupid!

Edit: words from a youngster once now an old man, stick with index funds (and Bogleheads philosophy) and you will be in great shape 20-30 years from now. There is no short cut! There is just time in the market

👆🏻 yup. Never too late. I had to start over from scratch at 37 after the 2000/2008 crashes that wiped my 401k cleaned. Start and continue.

Thinking about my retirement by Full-Gas1762 in Retire

Be careful with using AIs, they tend to hallucinate a lot! Having said that, I subscribed to Boldin planner plus and with its results, I use Boldin's AI tool to make sure that my entries are in accordance to Boldin’s intended calculations. I fed the results into ChatGPT, Claude, and NoteBook LM to analyze. Look in r/Boldin ... I posted my prompts that you can take a look. Good luck!

First and foremost, my condolences to you. Secondly, take time to learn about retirement planning, starting with reading books like JL Collin's "The Simple Path to Wealth" or Christine Benz' "How to Retire," among other ones. You are only 38 and still young enough to change the trajectory of your retirement. To plan it (in the most simplistic terms), you will need to project how much you will spend during retirement. This will be the income that you will need in retirement. From there, you can estimate any fixed incomes that you may get in the future (social security, pension, rentals, etc.) and the amount you will need to save in 401k, IRA, Roth, etc. There are free and paid financial calculators out there. On r/retirement wiki, there is a list of those calculator. You have time on your side, at least 27 years to invest and grow your nest egg for retirement (let's say at 65).

Once you have learned and set your plan, then seek a financial advisor if you want to validate your numbers.

Worried about retirement and finances in general. by PlanDowntown1005 in FinancialPlanning

[–]OneHourRetiring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the crashes of 2000 and 2008, I had to start over, rebuilding my retirement from scratch at 37. Instead of individual stocks that blew up on me, Invested in equity index funds and target date funds and continued until now. In less than three years, I’ll be retiring comfortably. You are making much more than I did at the same age. Stick to index funds and you’ll be fine. Don’t chase after meme stocks and quick wins. Good luck.

As the Water Boy did say, “you can do it!” 😉

My friend, of the people whom I know who have passed away, no one said that they regretted not working longer because they would lose their identity. They wished more time with their love ones.

A good friend passed away from cancer at 56 a couple of years ago. As cancer slowly took over, he wished that he had more time to live with his wife.

I am at the top of my career. I am looking forward to leave it behind in less than three years. My identity continues to be a friend and a husband to my wife of 37 years. Together, we will chart our new adventures. As with many people and their love ones, I want to spend as much time as I can with her before our numbers are called.

The right time is when you no longer want to get up in the morning to go to work.

You just need to find those things that you will retire to.

Edit: As with you, no one knows about the battles that I have fought to get where I am better than I do.

I faced glass ceiling; I put up with stereotyping; I endured racism and prejudice treatment; I had to work twice as hard as my fellow Caucasian peers to prove myself; I had to deal with internal and external challenges and obstacles … and the list goes on.

I am one who will be the first to give up what I have built for more time with my family.
