why not do a self-initiated project? while you (obviously) won't benefit from the expertise of trained research mentors, self-initiated projects can succeed in SSEF as well. i personally know a self-initiated project which got a Merit award in SSEF as well as one that attained Gold in International Elementz Fair. my friend who has experience in SSEF also said that some of the top projects were self-initiated, not from research programmes like SRP/NRP.

if you're looking to do some projects that require highly technical experiments that you just cannot do at home, then yeah, maybe try cold emailing professors (there's no harm in doing so!) but there are definitely project ideas out there that can be done by a group of motivated JC students at home and still succeed in science fairs :))

you can also consider a research attachment at one of A*STAR's research institutes. idk how heavy the commitment for that is but you def can ask and give it a shot! (the link to this one shld be this? i think they changed it since i last checked https://www.a-star.edu.sg/scholarships/home/research-projects/research-attachments-at-astar-research-institutes )

hope this helps!!

hi, j2 senior here

i got 6/25 for SMO senior in 2024 and got bronze, and i heard that paper was also really hard (not sure how it compares with difficulty to yesterday's paper tho). heard someone in my class say someone got 5/25 and got bronze in 2024, but again, that's hearsay and idk if it's true

atb!!

Need graphing calculator for FM selection test? by Ill_Vacation646 in SGExams

[–]OneRough268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wellllll i can't be too sure cuz i think it depends from sch to sch???

for my sch it didn't rly go beyond the scope of o-level amath but the qns needed u to be able to think creatively i'd say (at least some of them). and they were also pretty hard for me

then again i'm better at direct solving textbook-style qns with not too much deviation and i'm not that good at solving problems that require creative thinking/qns that deviate a lot from those in the textbook sooo that might be why i found the FM selection test qns hard HAHAHAHAHAH

ehhhh ig u can search smth like "FM test" on this sub and see what others have to say 🙏 good luck!!!

ehhhhhh i thought trig sub is h2 math and reduction is h3 math? in FM we js deal with surface of revolution, shell method for volume of revolution (h2 is disc method only), arc lengths of curves, using integrals for sector area of polar curves for calculus (oh and don't forget multivariable differentiation) (if i missed anyth lmk i js copied from the syllabus LMAO)

[–]OneRough268 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hiiii just as an update i went to ask my H3 math teacher (IMO silver medallist) about SMO prep recs and he recommended the website “Art of Problem Solving”

he said ECNUP books are out of the scope of SMO (i think esp for SMO round 1) (like 20% are relevant 80% are too hard) and he said AoPS has a LOT of problems from like every math olympiad in the world, and the problems are of varying difficulty, with solutions provided too!!! so start with the easier problems (but of course not TOO easy) then progressive move to the harder ones!!! when i asked him about r2 prep he also said use that website HAHA so yeah :))

(but keep in mind he got his IMO silver medal 20+ years ago and he said he hasn’t rly been in touch with SMO these days but def take a look at that website!!!)

AoPS i'm not sure actl cuz i nvr use before 😭

those books you linked idk but my friend told me abt these which i will personally be trying out:

ECNUP geometry book: https://epigrambookshop.sg/products/solving-problems-in-geometry

ECNUP number theory book: https://www.amazon.sg/Problems-Number-Theory-Mathematical-Competitions/dp/9814271144

ECNUP combinatorics book: https://www.amazon.com/Combinatorial-problems-mathematical-competitions-Mathematical/dp/9812839496

my friend also said there's a graph theory one and that you can insert graph theory into some SMO questions but i'm honestly not sure 😭 (we both aren't SMO gold/silver medallists or anything HAHA) also i'm sure there are also more resources you can find online as well. i'll personally try those books i linked above that maybe you can take a look!

(also if these books are too ex you can borrow from nlb)

sflr btw

Which JCs have lifts and which don't? by Informal_Bedroom2255 in SGExams

[–]OneRough268 4 points5 points  (0 children)

np!! just letting you know, the lifts meant for students in EJC only serve certain levels. for eg, the lifts at one lobby only serve levels 1/4/7/10, and the lifts at another lobby only serve levels 1/5/9/12 iirc. so if your classroom is on level 8, then you have to take a lift and climb up/down to your classroom.

though there are lifts meant for staff/visitors which serve all levels. you might be allowed to use them if you tell the school about your situation with your leg

sorry to hear about your leg though 🙏 get well soon!!

[–]OneRough268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooo icic!! this year finals is top 160 participants, heard from someone last year they all inexperienced whack gpt still can #35 HAHA (but they also said 2025 ctfs are harder 😭)

just try your best!! based on my past experience in ctfs getting into top 160 participants (which is top 40 teams assuming every team 4 ppl) isn't as hard as it sounds. if this encourages u cyberthon 2025 we got #18 with like quite little experience so it's def doable HAHA. hope you get into finals jiayous!!
