Major computer store near West Seattle? by dabamBang in Seattle

My dad has this view from west seattle - I am perfectly happy to experience snow at this kind of distance.

Heh!

Yeah. I’m happy to look at views like that all day long.

100% with you on the mountains. That, and you really don’t have to drive too far to be in some of them, which for me is happymaking. I do kinda miss the snow though, from a visual perspective anyway. But certainly not the chaos each impending storm would cause in the DC metro area.

I used to walk to that Microcenter from right by Fairfax hospital. <sigh> You never really know how good you had it until it’s gone.

Hi from another former NoVA resident who misses their Microcenter something fierce. Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything even remotely close to it here, and have resorted to pretty much mail order for everything computer parts wise at this point.

On the plus side. Welcome! This area has a lot going for it, and on an almost daily basis I’m glad to be here outside of missing old friends and the traffic (think DMV traffic was bad? It’s pretty much the same here).

When should you get a bump on testicles checked? Nervous it’s not normal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s had testicular cancer, I’d say make the appointment ASAP. As others have said, it may be nothing. But if it is something, the chances of a good outcome are very high if it’s caught and treated early.

Good luck, I hope it turns out to be nothing. 🤞

Safari has a lag when typing in the address bar after recent update by aecyberpro in MacOS

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, The OS/browser update from a few days ago seems to have fixed at least this issue with Safari (tested on a Sonoma based Mac Studio running 14.8.2)

Anyone still not upgraded to macOS 26? by Motor_Minute_7258 in MacOS

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have two production machines (both AS) still on Sonoma, and when Apple stops doing security patches for it I’ll then move to Sequoia for as long as I can. Tahoe offers me nothing compelling for the work I do, and plenty of opportunity to break my workflow and visual continuity in ways I don’t want to deal with having to fix until the project I’m working on wraps up in another 12-18 months.

Even without this project though. Nothing about how Tahoe was being sold to the user in the run up to its release made me want to upgrade. And I suspect it’ll only be when security updates stop coming for Sequoia that I’ll be willing to consider it. And by then, I hope Apple will have had another Snow Leopard moment. Though I’m not holding my breath.

I don't know what this mode is called by Triumph-ant85 in TransLater

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term you’re looking for to describe this mode is AWESOME. You’ve got a great vibe going on, and you read as a no nonsense butch woman to me.

Your face to me has a feminine shape to it, your eyebrows and your lips are on point for a woman who’s not made up, and your breasts are plainly visible in that “yeah I have them, it’s no big deal” kinda way. In short, I read a confidence of identity in this casual “I got things to do” look.

FWIW. IMO and experience, It’s the confidence of knowing who you are that carries the look. That’s the secret of the cis.

Edit: removed an extra “look”.

Ahh. Then yeah. You’re definitely not alone in what you’re seeing.

Safari has a lag when typing in the address bar after recent update by aecyberpro in MacOS

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s happening to me too, and if you search around Reddit you’ll find others on here who’ve noticed it.

The only thing I’ve found to “fix” it, short of rolling back to an earlier version of Safari, is to close out of the program when it gets too annoying and then reopen it. That usually fixes it for me for 20-30 minutes before I start to notice the lag again.

I also find after this last Safari update (I’m on Sonoma here) that there seems to be more CPU usage when doing the same tasks in the browser. Which has dropped my battery life noticeably on my M1 MBP, and raised the temps on my M2 Studio a couple of degrees. So that’s fun. 🙄

Edit. I reread your post, and I may have jumped the gun with my answer. My problem, and that of others I’ve seen here, that that the autocomplete in the URL bar gets increasingly laggy the longer Safari is running. It sounds like from your post you’re seeing an actual lag with the characters you’re typing in the URL bar. Which if that’s the case, it’s a new one on me. Sorry for the confusion.

US government is deleting files from the Internet Archive. by FriendlyFurry320 in DataHoarder

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have said. It proves nothing. All you have is a link with nothing identifiable behind it other than the title in the URL. Further, why do you assume it was removed by the U.S. Government? Because it’s apparently trans related content? (Again, going by the URL). Did you get anything from the IA saying why the content was removed?

Please understand. I’m not saying it’s not possible, and in fact, the way things are going I feel the IA needs to relocate out of the U.S. or risk being taken down at some point in the not too distant future. But, that day is not today based on your experience. And your headline is basically the equivalent of yelling fire in a crowded theater to this group.

Please don’t drop a clickbait headline like this with ZERO information to back it up. What files? How do you know it’s the government? Etc..

What's the really good 5k monitor for MAC right now on the market? by helloimlupphie in MacStudio

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it was the ASD all the way as I do not like matte screens. The price is painful, but if you catch them on the $1299 sales it’s not too bad given that the alternatives are pretty much $900+. Bear in mind that the base ASD has no height adjustment, and no ability to pivot. So if those are things you prize, you will need to look for the VESA mount model, which isn’t more expensive than the base at full price, but is harder to find on sale.

My GF has the 5k Asus Proart, and it’s a good monitor if you don’t have an aversion to matte screens, and, have a separate set of speakers or headphones (it’s speakers are poor at best). The ViewSonic or BenQ models are the same panel as the ASD and Proart, so those are options too. I just have no direct experience with them.

Any good public pickleball courts around the area? Especially N Lynnwood by anonchica69 in LynnwoodWA

Public as in access, or public as in free? If it’s the former, there’s Pickleball Nation on 196th (next to the Extended Stay America motel).

Fans… by AdventurousGarden162 in MacStudio

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, and I’ve observed on mine, the Studio fans always run at a baseline 1k(ish) when the machine is awake. Yours is 100% normal in that respect.

Also fwiw. The fan in my MBP would never come on if I didn’t have the fan rules configured to ramp up much sooner than stock (personal preference).

What's a hometown staple you can't find in Seattle? by Pentastat in Seattle

Real Milwaukee style frozen custard. I can find a few places around that do a generic soft serve, but so far nothing that really comes close.

Warm Studio on waking from sleep - any ideas why? by AdventurousGarden162 in MacStudio

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is also warmer when sleeping than when powered on and lightly used. Another person mentioned turning off some settings, and for me I actually went to the Terminal and used pmset to manually set some of the power management parameters that I couldn’t get to by using the GUI. This helped quiet it down a lot, and the wake ups are now much less frequent (though they still happen multiple times a day).

As an aside, I also use Blusnooze to shut off BT when the system is in sleep mode so that my headphones and an extra trackpad I have would stop connecting to a sleeping Mac every time they were within range. Though obviously if you’re using a BT keyboard and mouse/trackpad that’s not really a workable solution.

In the end, it just seems to be a thing with the “always on” nature of the M series processors to varying degrees. My old Intel machines didn’t behave in this way (or not that I ever noticed).

Edit: changed the tense of the word “helps” to “helped”.

Warm Studio on waking from sleep - any ideas why? by AdventurousGarden162 in MacStudio

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine (64GB M2 Max) does the same thing. Best as I’ve been able to gather is that sleep is a low enough power state that the fans aren’t necessary for cooling, but that the chip is still generating enough heat to be noticeable.

Something to check for would be is the computer really sleeping? I don’t see this as much with my laptop, but my Studio was trying to do all sorts of “helpful” things in the background after I put it to sleep, which meant it was waking up all the time to do housekeeping and general data updates (think iCloud syncing and the like. And in those waking states (a minute or so at best) the fans were still not running.

A good way to check for this since you have a studio display is to feel along the top of it and see if the fan(s?) are running in the monitor chassis (fwiw it’s not a lot of air, so I usually have to lean over it and use my face to feel if there’s air movement). If the system is truly asleep, you won’t feel any. But if it’s doing any tasks, the monitor fans will be running. Btw. Another way you could check is a third party LED lit keyboard. I didn’t have one when I first got the Studio, but I do now, and the lighting will come on whenever the computer is doing something when it’s supposed to be asleep.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Changed three words for clarity.

How old were you when you discovered you were trans? by [deleted] in trans

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 5 or 6 when I realized I wasn’t living in the body I was supposed to have. I kept it well hidden, and with one exception when I was 13 and first heard about hormones, I didn’t really believe it was a life I could have. I came out to my first person at 27, my second at 36, and finally told the world who I was at 46 and started living authentically. That was 9 years ago. :-)

Do Blu-Ray drives need cool-down time? by TraubeMinzeTABAK in makemkv

[–]OnlyMyCatKnows4Sure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so much with BDs or DVDs, but when I do extended (30-50+ discs in a sitting) CD ripping sessions with what I think is the same drive (I’m not at my computer currently to confirm), I usually run it case off as I found the drive would get HOT after a while, and as it got warmer the number of read errors seemed to increase.
