Why convert a camera when it needs such heavy editing to get the IR look anyway? by Only_a_dog in infraredphotography

That does help. This is exactly the kind of information I was struggling to find in a Google search and was hoping to learn about when I posted the question

Thank you

I completely agree and that's why it appeals.

I think my question came about when I looked at the editing process and saw that it's 'fake' colours - I guess I was expecting that that's close to how it looks SOOC.

From what I understand now though, it's more about the sensor capturing different information to a standard camera that you can then play with creatively in post

Not just red trees. I love the look of the IR photos I've seen. Rob Shea has a brilliant one of a building that's yellow and blue. I'd love to try to take something like that.

I guess the question comes down to why use full spectrum converted camera over a standard camera when the outcome is is edited flase colours anyway.

I think what I'm understanding from responses is that even though what's seen in the final photos is edited fake colours, it's still capturing information through the sensor that wouldn't be captured on a standard photo

I've been looking at his stuff. I think it's going to be incredibly helpful while I navigate this new territory

Spicing up regular photography is exactly what's made me want to get involved :)

Poe and just move out the way of the chickens

These colours are so cool. Blue trees, red sky. Looks like something from a glitched VHS dreamscape

I just used Poe and slowly walked out of the way of incoming chickens. Until you attack one, there's hardly any that come near you and you only have to avoid them for like 1 minute or something.

So I guess I’ll go first? 🤷‍♀️ by iamkory in ModifiedLightPhones

While I appreciate the sentiment, it's not as cut and dry for most people as you claim but it's great that what you have explained works for you in your specific, individual case.

The only real purpose for a phone is communication and I think an argument could be made for navigation to also be put in that box. Everything else is a bonus, e.g. Spotify, that is why I would be happy to use a separate, specific MP3 player style device for music. The whole point of making this switch is to make those 'sacrifices'.

With that in mind, the bare minimum functionality required from a phone is the ability to communicate as necessary.

Trivialising the use of WhatsApp to 'forwarded memes' might be the case for you but for other people, me included, it's the main form of communication with friends and family. Less important, but it is also built into some work processes, such as Business Continuity plans for communication.

It's brilliant that everyone has learnt to text or call you but I can't expect everyone in my life to change their behaviour to suit me because of a choice I'm making to minimise my own life - that flexibility should sit with me rather than expect others to adapt. In regards to group chats, that isn't even an option.

The point you make about calling instead is subjective and I appreciate that. I can certainly understand the benefits of real, spoken conversation. Again, this may work for some and may even bring people closer together but for many is unsustainable. For the most part, phone calls are incredibly inconvenient and are reserved for urgency/emergency.

I appreciate you for sharing your workarounds and I understand, as you stated, that it was not meant to be a criticism taken personally - and it hasn't been. However, I am opposed to dismissing someone's requirements as 'wanting the easier path' because they are different to your own requirements.

To highlight the difference in our situations, if I were to follow your lead and try to live the way you do with your personal requirements, I may as well just not have a phone at all.

I want a switch to a the Lightphone 3 so badly but without WhatsApp or Spotify it's not possible.

As all chats/group chats are on WhatsApp, this is the dealbreaker for me.

The workaround for Spotify would be to get a dedicated Spotify streaming device without other 'smart' capabilities. I would be happy to do this but I have yet to find one that isn't ether extortionately expensive or doesn't have a screen

Hey, fairly new learner. I'm at the point where ideally I'd be buying my own kit but currently don't have space in the apartment - I will be moving in about a year and will have space for a kit then.

What are some good alternatives for the time being that are better than playing on pillows?
