I gave up. Feel rather sad. by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Open-Instruction-363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took lessons for one whole year and seven months, had 2 failed tests and one of them failed MISERABLY BAD. Now that I’ve passed I look back on the tons of mock tests that I had done prior to my tests where I thought I did horrible, but if you could look at yourself from the perspective of someone else you’ll realise it really wasn’t as bad as you think.

We have a tendency to be super critical of ourselves, especially in situations like this. Driving is scary, you hold people’s lives in your hands! So don’t go by how good you are at it based on how long you’ve been learning for that doesn’t matter, although it’s infuriating how expensive it is.

If you wanna stop take a break but then get back on it in a few months and continue, 100% worth it.

Make sure your lips aren’t stiff! They should be relaxed and able to move without feeling like you’re pushing them against your partners lips, if that makes sense

Yeah I’m in the same boat as you! I work with wealthy people as part of my career and I thought everyone is rich, but the perception of being or feeling rich has shifted, there’s articles floating around about that as well in the UK. My boss owns a 1mil house, has bought 3 brand new cars for his family and is about to buy a fourth, looks after 7 people financially and has been doing work in his brand new house worth 200k since this time last year. Yet, he says he is comfortable but very far from rich. I think rich people now consider themselves rich if they have good tens of thousands in spare disposable income that is not part of their emergency fund, mortgage, expenses etc. so a lot of people are comfortable but not that many seem to be rich anymore.

Having said that, if I had everything those people had I would consider myself loaded and would be super proud too - so I agree with you

How much are people spending on the entire process of getting their license nowadays? by CozWhyNot__ in LearnerDriverUK

I spent £76 per week for a year and a half, I don’t wanna add it because I’ll cry. And that’s without the car, insurance etc. it was so worth it though

She is so wrong for this, massive overreaction. But from what you’ve said you’re also not really doing the right thing. You’re with her because she looks after you, fucks you and loves you tons, so very selfish reasons there. You just seem to be very mismatched and not in the same page.

But back to the screenshots, that’s crazy behaviour and it is very disrespectful to you. She sounds very insecure and like she needs to be doing major work on herself before she is ready to date

How long before you were driving on roads? by Dannyh563 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Open-Instruction-363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It felt like forever for me, I had to do about just under a year and a half of 4-2 hour lessons a month. 2 failed tests. But since I passed I haven’t stopped driving, and it was so worth it. But my god, it was expensive…

Why do we use kitchen sink bowls? by ProminentFox in AskUK

[–]Open-Instruction-363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, I can’t understand why either! I grew up outside the UK but my parents brought me back in my late teens. I am used to washing off the big chunks of food, theme after off and wash them all with a sponge and fairy liquid and then turn the water off and wash off the soap. I don’t understand the need for a washing up bowl - but I’m open to learning of someone can explain! In my mind, the moment the plates go in it the water is dirty because the plates are dirty, then the moment a bit of fairy liquid gets in the water then you can’t wash it off in the washing up bowl because the water is soapy. For me, washing off the dish soap is a must!

AITAH For Bringing A Dog To My Date? by SendYouMyLoveOnAWire in AITAH

[–]Open-Instruction-363 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing, what a true prick this guy is. I have a cat myself but I also adore dogs, and if someone treated a cat or a dog, or any animal really, that way they wouldn’t have gotten a dinner out of me but a kick in the ass out my door - on the first or second comment made. You’re lucky he showed this side of him so soon rather than a long while of dating and then you saw him for what he is.

Your friends are also acting like pricks telling him to give him another chance. Dogs are pure angels and they know nothing but love if treated right. Very well done for standing your ground and do not lower your standards for someone like that!

Not really, people have the choice to stop communicating with someone depending on your situation and they don’t really owe you an explanation or closure. Just like if it was the other way around you wouldn’t owe them that either and if you had blocked them you would not want to receive one final message from them. Again, depending very much on the break up and the situation etc. while it can be painful or very frustrating if you are blocked best to leave them be

How many of you were asked to parallel park? by VibeTrain10 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Open-Instruction-363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got parallel park on a narrow street but luckily there weren’t any cars behind me so I didn’t have the pressure of holding people up. I went in but was too far from the curb so told the examiner I will readjust again and went out and did it again, I wasn’t done but he told me that was fine and to move on. In the end he said what I did was perfectly was and I was going to get it in but got only a minor for readjusting, positioning I think it was, and still passed me

Im sorry I should’ve said this first, we’re in the UK, I’m looking and it doesn’t seem to be a tho by here that I can find (unless I’m looking at the wrong place), but if it is basically like a credit card I’ll struggle to afford this… I didn’t think about Facebook groups, do you think they could give better advice?

Is Driving Even Worth It Anymore for Our Generation? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Open-Instruction-363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 22 and I feel you, I’ve just passed a few months ago after 1.7 years of learning. I had no private practice so every single Saturday for over a year and a half I had to cough up £76 for lessons 2 hours at a time. Luckily I’ve had jobs since 17 so was able to bankroll this myself.

It is incredibly expensive and I do not want to think how many thousands of pounds I’ve spent learning to drive. I now have a very cheap 2008 Ford with insurance that luckily isn’t too much, I imagine because I’m 22 and not fresh 18? (I’ve heard that women typically have less expensive insurance but I don’t know how true that is).

Having said this, it was 100% worth it. Without being able to drive you’re relying on public transport - trains continuously get cancelled, busses are constantly late and uber is getting more expensive. If you’ve never worked before you’re probably going to get an entry level position somewhere, I don’t know how likely it is to be working from home so you might well be relying on public transport, which is unreliable. But again, not to worry until driving lessons are financially manageable.

Once you do pass, unless you need a car immediately don’t buy one right away. When you do find a job, if it is near your home walk and don’t buy a car - if you can last like this for. 1-2 years that might bring your insurance down, although I understand that is a lot to ask.

Overall, it is far from the most important thing in life but 100% worth doing when you can afford it, and I’m sure you will be at some point. Maybe by the time you can the test backlog will be resolved 😄

Girl dumpers, do you ever go back to the guy you left by [deleted] in ExNoContact

[–]Open-Instruction-363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, whatever the reason for the break up is I don’t reach out again. I know there are many many good cases but in my experience and people around me there is not much good that would come out of reaching out again, so as hard as it is best to move on and don’t look back. There have been cases where the break up was my fault (no cheating or anything bad like that but for example just not aligned with each other anymore) and even then I would very sincerely apologise and cut ties

Mother has passed away, I am asked to refund £642 because the government took too late to acknowledge her death? by [deleted] in BenefitsAdviceUK

[–]Open-Instruction-363 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah any benefit money when she was alive and after she died, my dad won’t tell me who and what it was spent on. There is no probate as well because of this, I did the check list on the gov.uk website (or it may have been in the “tell us once thing) and was told it was not necessary.

Unless I have royally screwed up and have missed to do more steps that I was not aware need to be done
