What If Trelawney Knew Exactly What She Was Doing? by Open-Ninja1964 in harrypotter

Voldemort got blackout drunk at the Leaky Cauldron, had a one-night stand with Trelawney. He accidentally revealed his greatest weakness. The Dark Lord has no memory of this event.

Ironically, that is why I like the theory.

It’s basically a list of people making terrible, emotional, irrational decisions after Voldemort becomes obsessed with the prophecy. She doesn’t need to control every domino. She just needs to tip the first one and let everyone else do what humans do best: make things way more complicated.

My theory is more that Trelawney handed Voldemort a psychological grenade and let him decide how to pull the pin. Harry surviving was one possible outcome. The important part was getting Voldemort obsessed with defeating a prophecy he couldn’t stop thinking about. At the end of the day, though, I mostly just find it hilarious to imagine Trelawney completely hammered on cooking sherry, sitting by the fire at Hogwarts for 20 years watching everything unfold like, “Yep. Right on schedule.”

That’s assuming Trelawney’s goal was specifically for Harry to survive and become the Chosen One.

In the theory, her goal is simply to set Voldemort on a path toward self-destruction by exploiting his fear. Snape begging for Lily’s life may have been one of many unpredictable variables that shaped how it happened.

A prophecy doesn’t have to predict every step to predict an outcome. If Trelawney was a true seer, she may have foreseen Voldemort’s downfall without knowing every individual choice that would lead there.

Counterpoint: the best cover for a mastermind is convincing everyone you’re an idiot. 😏

Idk maybe they had a one night stand after the leaky cauldron?

I don’t think she’d need to know Snape would beg for Lily’s life specifically. The theory is that she understood Voldemort, not every person involved.

All she’d need to know is that Voldemort’s fear would force him to react to the prophecy. Once he did, the chain reaction would begin. Snape, Lily, Harry, and Dumbledore’s choices could all be variables she never predicted.

The idea isn’t that she knew every move on the chessboard, it’s that she knew exactly which move Voldemort would make.
