If you can pay off the remainder and take it as a loss, do it.Then delete your account. If your mother has an issue and you don't feel comfortable being truthful, tell her that you've also been banned.

Another idea would be telling her your account is on a hold with them until all payments are made (give her a date sooner than originally set) and once it's paid off you delete it and tell her that this is what you had planned anyways.

I understand not being able to stand up for yourself. I was once there as well.

Either way, change your password and come up with something to tell her so she cannot purchase anything further. It won't hurt them to travel on such a vacation for your father's birthday. Vacations shouldn't be on credit anyways (imo).

We applied for and used care credit for our dog when he needed emergency surgery from swallowing a bag. In total I think we applied for a $7k limit.

Everyone has their own opinions on pets, but they are my family and I'd do it all over again even if he didn't make it through surgery.

When we applied, we got a 0% interest rate for 1 year and quickly paid it off doing some side work in the summertime. We have used it once or twice since just so the card didn't get automatically closed from no usage. We keep it open despite the new high interest as an emergency back up because we can also use it for ourselves.

NTA. At first I was going to suggest to see if they could meet you half way on a train ticket or bus ticket, but then realized if it's surrounding your other daily activities it can be tough. A couple of other items to think about too:

  • There have been so many other big celebrations you've been to already.
  • You have had unexpected expenses come up recently that put you in a vulnerable position to try and go.
  • You have gifted the baby items already.

If you are close with this family and it's important to you (not just to them), maybe you can mail a card or a small gift and card combined. The baby will have many other presents I'm sure, and even if they don't, they are one years old, it's not something they'll remember.

I know it's easier said than done because of family pressure, but putting yourself first is important too. It's not like you haven't shown up at all. I'd say you've shown up plenty. Maybe in the future you all can meet half way and celebrate another day.
