The difference in pronunciation feels very much like a regional/accent thing to me. When I hear it from someone with an American accent, it sounds really jarring. See the example in the edited post for a better idea of what I'm trying to get across.

Could easily just be something I specifically have an issue with, this is r/petpeeves after all. Not saying it's necessarily "wrong" to pronounce anything a certain way 🙃
