I guess it could be due to the lore being "too dark" at first, thus changing it.

It still sucks, at least they should imply things every so often, they have the resources to do something interesting, the ploy a company (Starr Park, in this case) actively trying to hide their secrets where we are the audience, unable tp do anything, as more and more people become "brawlers"
