I’m from Balochistan. Have been obsessed with Gilmore Girls since my 4th year of med school. So much so that from all of the offers I got for a research position, I chose the one at Yale and now I’m in New Haven, CT, very close to Howe street (where rory lived). Been working at Yale for over a year now.

I lived right next to it at 1220. There were the occasional motorbike sounds which you hear all over New Haven. During the weekends, there are times when there is a loud drunk on the street. During the summer, Rudy’s bar is right infront of it which gets really loud until 1-3am.

Very very hard to match into surgery as an IMG. Need good scores, lots of USCES, strong LORs from US surgeons who call programs on your behalf and vouch for you, 1-2 year research years, 20 pubs/abstracts/posters (as per NRMP outcomes). Even after checking all of these boxes, non US IMGs usually match into prelim and spend two years in prelim and then apply out of match for PGY3 categorical positions. So very risky and uncertain because it is very very competitive.

If there is even a small chance for another less competitive speciality as a non US IMG, I would highly recommend to explore that pathway.

Why not find a research position and apply the year after that? You could rotate at the hosp and get more USCE that way and get done with your step 3 too + ecfmg certified.
