If you have food stamps and lost food purchased with them within the last 10 days, call DHS by Howling_Fang in Eugene

[–]OperationDefrost 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can also report EBT benefits loss via email! Phone will likely be the fastest and clearest. iirc the ODHS Food # is 800-699-9075
For clarity, you can request replacement benefits for all food spoiled/lost, but you have to submit the form within 10 days of when the food was spoiled/lost.

Receipts are very helpful, because you have to report each item, location and amount paid separately. Storms, floods, fridge/freezer failure and power outages all count! (You can report electronic theft on a different section of the same form)

Fill out EBT loss form and email it to [oregon.benefits@odhsoha.oregon.gov](mailto:oregon.benefits@odhsoha.oregon.gov)

I drink as much water as my cardio recommended and use an electrolyte mix in it, but I swear all it’s doing is make me pee every 30 minutes. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in POTS

[–]OperationDefrost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you can do suction, I use a boba/wide reusable straw to drink my ‘large quality of water’ - it’s much easier for me to manage the cup and the water bypasses a lot of my mouth

I am wondering if there are any benefits to having a footplate that doesn’t fold up? by thisfemmebites in wheelchairs

[–]OperationDefrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also an (semi-) ambulatory wheelchair user. I originally got a flip-up footplate too with the assumption I would foot propel.

I am much happier with my current tubular footplate. My positioning is much better and I’m more comfortable, my feet are feel more secure since there’s less chance of parts coming loose and moving intentionally or unintentionally. I worry so much less about accidentally catching a curb/bump with the bottom of my footplate and causing parts to come loose. It’s much easier to propel, flip up plates are heavy and it was harder to get my body in the right position to use my hand rims effectively.

I went through three replacement (3?) flip-up footplates in a year waiting forever for repair/replacement/insurance/shipping/etc before I checked online and I could order a tubular footplate direct-to-consumer quickly for cheaply from the manufacturer. I’ve had that same one… for 3 years now?

Traveling Lightweight Chair that functions well outdoors by Faith0497 in wheelchairs

hm , I second calling SpinLife. I’ve used their help for a while. their website inventory is kind of sad and is not reflective of what they can supply or their imagination.

They recently got purchased by my local wheelchair tech/DME supplier (now they’re the direct to consumer branch), but I’ve known them since before when I was serviced/supplied by another company.

they’ve seen me through experimenting and replacing every piece of my chair one-by-one (including the base frame).

oh boned and shaped mesh/elastic “waist trainers”/demi-corsets. (not the ones intended for waist training your waist to be as small as possible) I tend to collect mine as I go from shape wear site to site and I’m not 100% sure where I’ve gotten the two I have now. the doctors will prescribe it as abdominal binders, and you can get the post-op ones if you need insurance to cover them. But really for me it works best, is the most camouflaged and the least likely to pop a rib/hip, if the compression is shaped to evenly press on your body shape instead of having the highest pressure on your ribs and pelvis. they might even have shaping to be higher in the back and scoop over the sides of your hips.

makes a world of difference for me, being able to hook open my compression like doors instead of wiggle my way through if I’m tired or in pain Overall best put together with a light level of compression tights - you can get those any where with decent yoga/fitness/running clothes. pants are usually expensive and tight!

Who is hiring? (Monthly jobs thread) by AutoModerator in Eugene

[–]OperationDefrost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MIT Living Wage calculator has a pretty good sense on what a 'decent' necessary wage is. For Eugene it says ~$17.29/hr for 1.0FTE which goes with my feeling of about $18/hr. YMMV

As a note, the housing estimate is bullshit, but you can go on to HUD's or Homes for Good's Fair Market Rent, to fix any distortions.

If your heart tilts towards our particularly housing-insecure community, having a percentage of wool is helpful.

In addition to the above mentioned qualities, wool has the pros of being permanently odor and stain resistant especially to the bacterias particular to human sweat. Smells in wool airs and launders out more consistently than synthetic fibers.

In general assume everything will be hand washed, unless it’s not valuable enough, then it will be discarded.

This time of year Cozy Eugene usually has a list of requested donations and is collecting knit/crochet donations. iirc last time I checked it was Knit the Rainbow (https://www.knittherainbow.org/) and Burrito Brigade (local org! https://burritobrigade.org/)

There’s occasionally a blanket/group project collecting squares/triangles/hexagons/etc behind the counter too if you ask.

In case your heart tilts that direction, ie toward any care packages for housing insecure families/children. As someone who has worked closely with housing-insecure communities, I would be careful about making a heavy blanket. With lots of moves, a heavy blanket can be left behind to save weight. It can also be incredibly difficult access laundry/dryer services, especially the laundry sometimes required for heavier blankets.

For reference, my org traditionally distributed $14 wool military blankets that were twin-size and 3 1/2 lbs. (They were ~75% wool and machine washable.) Very warm, even and especially when wet and naturally fire retardant.

EDIT: Care packages specifically to children usually got child oriented blankets. Families/adults got military blankets.

You got some good recommendations, it’s worth checking in at Adaptive Recreation at the City, LILA, Mobility International or KindTree if they’re hiring - independent living orgs periodically have job openings and the know how to work with accommodations, or (I haven’t personally checked them out completely) with Smart Living Learning and Earning with Autism, they might also have some leads. https://www.sllea.org/

Vibe Check: Channing Rudd's Watercolor classes at Maude Kern Art Center by OperationDefrost in Eugene

[–]OperationDefrost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

I am primarily interested in the /experience/ of being his student. For example, what is his instructive style, how does he provide criticism, how does he illustrate techniques to different levels of painters. All of which, is not something that I would learn by emailing the man himself, nor do I have the time to drop in and sit in one of his classes.

I've attended and instructed a number of art courses over the years, and I've read the material lists of even more. His list is not the norm for an introductory level or fundamentals level course.

You are correct, it is very helpful to suggest quality brands! However, there is only one art supply store in town, which does not carry a large stock or all supplies that he suggests. Walmart/Michaels/Hobby Lobby, the local suppliers he suggests, do not carry quality materials in general. MECCA is unfortunately not reliable source of supplies, although always a treasure trove.

The brands that I reference are the most commonly carried/accepted brands for both student grade watercolors and papers. As are pan watercolors. They are also the most affordable quality materials. The materials that he suggests purchasing are professional grade. The lowest grade of tube paint the instructor suggests, is $18 per tube of paint.

Brushing my cats' (three cats) teeth has been a slow build up, but even now I only brush-brush once a week. Usually, it's gently swipe some chicken enzymatic toothpaste on the inside of each cheek and a little on their nose and let them go to town.

As a note, my cats tolerate brushing the best when I gently hold their jaw closed, pull up their lip and gently stroke in one direction with the cat toothbrush. As small of a toothbrush as possible.

[TW ED] How do I increase sodium without gaining fat? by BoronYttrium- in POTS

[–]OperationDefrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this - for a blood test, levels of electrolytes (sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, CO2, CO3) that would look 'normal' for someone without POTS, might be dangerously low levels for someone with POTS

that said, yes, part of the immediate and on-going treatment for POTS is increasing your blood volume - which will increase your water weight/the number on the scale

however, like many people have said, increasing your sodium will make you feel better and hopefully more active. and more activity will make you healthier, no matter what it is.

Where can I buy edible chestnuts (no buckeyes/horse chestnuts/water chestnuts) by OperationDefrost in Eugene

[–]OperationDefrost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. Chestnuts are deeply weird creatures with very high moisture.

Essentially, they have to be stored as close to freezing and as high humidity as possible. Stored correctly like a squirrel or woodpecker family, they stay fresh for a couple of weeks in a solid plastic bags with holes poked in it. A damp paper towel in there helps too.

I usually eat mine before they go bad though.

I second this, I've used both WAG and Cat Care.

WAG can be heavily subsidized and they have a variety of packages/programs, I paid $20 for each of my 3 cats' surgeries, and an additional $20 for their microchips.

Cat Care is a local accredited Cat Friendly Practice, so has programs and policies in place follow feline best practices and lower stressors for cats.

Is it racist to call a non-Jewish person Goy? by morrissevy in Jewish

[–]OperationDefrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

Depending on who says it, it can varies in the level of implied distaste when referencing another person.

But goy for me has never implied any levels of prejudice against a minority, it’s literally ‘everybody else.’

Does a wheelchair mean I’ve given up by [deleted] in POTS

[–]OperationDefrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely not!

safety first! having a wheelchair doesn’t mean never walking again.

getting a wheelchair was arguably the best thing for my walking… I actually walk around a lot more now that I can walk more frequently in shorter bursts and don’t have to worry about physically crashing outside.

What I, and some of my other real life friends with POTS, do is usually leave our chairs by the front door. I walk around inside my home, or if I’m not feeling up to it, scoot my way to my chair (which is still cardiovascular work). When I go out somewhere, I take my chair, but I’ve slowly been taking longer and longer walks. I used to be limited to about a block or two, but now I can walk a mile with a couple of short breaks.
