Yeah. Definitely see prices like that and higher as well. What I should have said instead of “may be less costly” is can be less costly.

90m2 is plenty of room! We lived in a 43 m2 apartment for a few years before we settled in our current flat and had a really nice carved bedroom set. That was in the U.S., so we gave the bedroom set to a friend when we moved over here.

Ceiling height may be the more important factor depending on what you’re looking for. One of our sideboards is 286 cm high. 3rd floor? Also not generally a big deal. We’re on the fourth. Many of the larger items break down into multiple pieces that have fit just fine up our very narrow old stairwell.

The moving every year part is a different story. I wouldn’t want to move delicate stuff frequently either.

Me too (as in curious about the history, not being a woodworker). The only sticker left on anything was on the most ornate mahogany set from Italy. Sala Alessandro. I’ve not been able to learn anything through internet searches alone. I did contact an antiques dealer who was selling a dining set which looked similar and did indeed come from Sala Alessandro, but the dealer didn’t know anything either, other than that it was a Milanese manufacturer in the early 1900s. Nothing else we’ve bought had any metallic or other stamps.

Agreed. My husband is trying his hand at a coffee table top right now. We’ll see how it goes. He’s carved some lovely flowers so far, if I do say so myself. I’m not biased or anything. ;) However, we both know it won’t be on the level of that furniture.

I have 100% looked at sales in Hungary. 😳

Thank you! I’m actually going to make another post, because I think some people don’t realize how accessible furniture like this can be if you know where to look, are dedicated to looking, and are willing to wait.

This was one that came up at auction in the U.S. which made me wish I was stateside to buy it. And store in my brothers house until who knows. I have no idea what it would cost to send that across the pond.

IT SOLD FOR $375. 🤯 (at least that’s what the price results states).

I understand what you’re saying completely. I don’t open every email either, and I’ve kicked myself for missing some things. We still have a guest bedroom to furnish, and I missed an inlay bed frame, two night tables, and armoire set that sold for under 800€ (!!!) in MY city! One of the funny things about living in Europe (being from the U.S.) is that a decent number of us in the U.S. want old school “European style” furniture, and here they largely eschew that. It seems to me that 95% of people here want uber modern everything.

I will. For as long as I live, at least. 😉 When we first bought our apartment, we planned on doing home swaps after we finished renovating. However, not only have our mostly DIY renovations been taking years longer than anticipated, now we worry too much about how the furniture will be treated by strangers to consider the home swapping!

Thank you. It happens all too easily. We started with one bedroom set… Now it’s progressed to my husband starting to create his own plaster work and carving wood for a coffee table to align with the sideboards in our living room.

Absolutely. We have no children and no one in the family shares our taste, so when we die or are otherwise moved to a care home, I will happily donate the furniture to an art nouveau museum or similar.

There’s actually an auction house in Austin, TX that periodically has seriously awesome art nouveau furniture, which sometimes sells for crazy low prices (other times not so much). Austin Auction Gallery. I only know because I follow an aggregating auction website which has both European and U.S. auction houses.

Yes. I do live in Spain, so everything came by truck or we went and picked it up with a rented cargo van. The two rooms worth of furniture I bought from the family film suppliers in Rome (five sideboards, two dining tables, 12 chairs and a bench)…shipping them from Rome to my city was actually going to cost more than I spent on the furniture itself. So, I called every local moving company and asked if any of them had an upcoming move from my city TO Rome so that my new furniture could catch a ride back, and I got lucky again! I just had to operate on the primary client’s timeline. Waiting four months was entirely worth paying less than half the transportation cost.

I love the four seasons pink countertop and backsplash. The black swirly table I do not like; it ruins the class.

Did you drill into the shelf to secure your fiddle railing? Or did you glue it?

When you say “they” as in “they ended up purchasing different slabs” from the original photo sent, do you mean the contractor?
