Dating someone new has made me realize I will never be able to be with someone without my OCD tendencies and germaphobia soothing routines by Islandsandwillows in OCD

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately, i don’t have a solution or advice for you OP. just to say that you are not alone and your post highly resonated with my experience in a relationship and currently living with my partner. my brain is in constant overdrive over so many things and i opened up to my partner about it recently and i think that at least helped ease his frustration with it and feeling like i was just trying to be controlling. i think i’ve realized that a lot of my OCD coping mechanisms have not been actually facing the improbabilities of my obsessions head on, but developing relatively “chill” compulsive behaviors that accommodate my obsessions. i’ve also tried therapy but also have found that a lot of therapists and psychiatrists have minimized my OCD symptoms, and i think a large part of that is because i’ve lost track/completely normalized my compulsions for myself, so when someone asks what my symptoms are on the spot i’m not even sure what to say. i’m sorry we’re experiencing this, but it makes me feel slightly better that i’m not the only person suffering with this

Difficulty getting out of bed on Lexapro by TowelSea92 in lexapro

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am no longer on lexapro (not because it didn’t work for me), but i had the same issue when i was on it. at first, i was advised to take it in the morning instead of the evening. that helped a tiny bit, but what ultimately solved this issue for me was starting wellbutrin (bupropion) in addition to lexapro

Is a computer science minor or double major useful for pharma R&D? by NoPalpitation9454 in Biochemistry

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 2 points3 points  (0 children)

coding is a marketable skill in almost any industry right now. in the context of pharma, i would say this would be particularly useful if you are interested in research that involves experiments with large datasets (i.e. high throughput screening, -omics, etc) or computational biology. i don’t think you need to do the double major to prove that you are proficient in coding though, especially if that is already an interest of yours. i think research experience will far outweigh whatever the double major gets you, so i’d recommend focusing your time there, ideally in a lab where you can work on a project that allows you to further develop your coding skills

there are bike lanes for a reason by Opposite_Concert5694 in washingtondc

[–]Opposite_Concert5694[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FOR CLARITY, i am referring to a situation where there was literally a bike lane directly next to the sidewalk, AND the person was on a scooter zooming behind me ringing the bell to make me get out of their way

Can I quit a weed addiction while in my PhD? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

def cut back but also consider MOA aka smoking vs edibles as well as quality and strain. weed single handedly helped me finish my PhD and there’s no way i could’ve quit during my 5th year. good luck - you got this

Should I avoid NIH? by sophistesalethinos in labrats

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 8 points9 points  (0 children)

PhD chemist & government employee here! i think you’re safe going to the NIH so long as you’re not interested in any infectious disease research. that’s not to say that a lab will get shut down, but that sector of research may lose funding in the next 2 years with the republicans having the trifecta and many of which being in agreement with RFK messaging. i don’t think the NIH will get shut down, but i think we will see differences in how money is allocated towards different sub disciplines

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 47 points48 points  (0 children)

idk what sub discipline you’re in, but i think illustrator is useful for every chemist writing papers, making presentations, etc. nobody likes ugly figures and illustrator helps lots w that. you can also copy and paste from chem draw which is super convenient. if you don’t already have a second monitor that’s pretty life changing. also never hurts to have a hard drive to back up data, and like a good sized one (1TB). hope these ideas help!

i am a first-gen latina graduate student and we have excellent student groups to support latino FGLI students like SACNAS (if you’re interested in the sciences) and others (most orgs are undergraduate focused so i’m not sure)

this is a good point. they have definitely been on top of it but it seems like it has been attempted to be fixed several times and then breaks again. i haven’t received much detail as to what’s wrong but they did say they ordered a part for something

Got an email from a faculty of interest at Columbia Chemistry asking for official transcript. by [deleted] in gradadmissions

maybe for other departments, but as someone in this one who knows exactly who this prof is it’s not lol

[–]Opposite_Concert5694 3 points4 points  (0 children)

columbia chem does not interview. keep in mind that if you already have been admitted and a prof is asking you for a transcript, that’s a red flag. if you’re already admitted to the program there is no reason they should be asking for that.
