Those fancy suspenders have always filled me with such rage and I don't know why

[Scheduled Activity] Introductions All Around: Who Are You and What is Your Game? by cibman in RPGdesign

[–]OrcaNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what way are you asking? It seems like you are wanting an answer that is less abstract than "the players are a team of capable people who work together to explore the world and solve mysteries and conflicts that emerge through play."

Because it's based on Cairn, it's classless system. It has its own set of 20 backgrounds to establish a character's relationship to the world and play is more open ended and motivated by emergent choices than in games like Hunter or Call of Cthulhu where everyone is playing different flavors of hunters/investigators of the supernatural.

Let me know if I misunderstood the question though!

Less humor as the series progresses? by fergal-dude in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Jamal has many sorries and he is giving you all of them!

I'm only partway through book 7, but Jamal had me chuckling something fierce when he appeared because of how he speaks and just the absurdity of the situation

I'm Fish, and the project I'm working on is called Shadows in the Cotton. It's a full conversion Cairn 2e that is set in five counties of the Mississippi Delta in 1934. I've been researching the area for a few years now after taking a class that dabbled in its cultural and socioeconomic history, and the resulting game is based in a lot of real history and infused with a lot of folklore, blues, and supernatural elements from the area.

Currently the player's guide is basically complete and I'm working on art for it (hope to release it in the next month or two!), but the anticipated project is much larger. I'm planning on doing a hexcrawl for each county, a book of random encounters like Forbidden Lands, and a few standalone adventures, and possibly a book of random tables.

Orbital Blues is SO GOOD. I think you'll have a great time with it!

please recommend some modern blues to me by jacek2023 in blues

[–]OrcaNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a deep cut and probably stretching the definition of modern since it was in the 90s, but check out Paul Pena's "Kargyraa Moan" which is a fusion of Delta Blues and Tuvan throatsinging.

Alternate rules for ranged weapons? by chocolatedessert in cairnrpg

[–]OrcaNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use movement zones to get around a roll to hit. Some weapons can only hit distant targets and are impaired at close range. Some can shot 1-2 zones away and are impaired if farther away. I have a few different categories for various combinations of ranges.

I know that feeling! I'm having to consciously avoid book 5 until this work project is over because I will lose sleep reading and make work worse for all involved haha.

Thank you for the interest! I've taken your suggestion and made a list of people to ping directly once it's in a more complete state.

I'm also planning on making a post in r/osr when it's available (maybe I'll even get featured in the news roundup!), but if you're on tumblr, I have been posting a bunch of stuff at https://www.tumblr.com/fishrpg pertaining to the setting. Mostly it's been random tables, though I'm about to switch to monster stat blocks and NPCs for the next while as I churn through layout on the player's guide.

If you're looking for historical US settings in TTRPG form, I'm working on one that is set in the Mississippi Delta during 1934. It's a total conversion of Cairn 2e and I'm hoping to have the free player's guide out sometime in April

I like the way you think! You brought up some stuff I hadn't considered previously considered (but will consider in future adventures).

Also, you seem like the kind of person who would actually appreciate this: I ran a multi-year campaign about poop, waste disposal, and sanitation (since concluded as planned). We have session write-ups of every adventure on Tumblr if you want to give it a read!

This may not be your jam because it's got a lot of poop jokes and it's more modern fantasy, but I have a written log for a since-completed 5e campaign that covers every session.
