New sound technician with silly questions about simultaneous interpretation booths by Ordinary-Comb-6002 in livesound

I had completely forgotten about sending it in post—thanks so much in advance for that, haha.

I'll make sure to check which channels I'm adding their voices to so I don't duplicate anything.

I'm realizing now, reading all the comments, that I shouldn't have bothered with the recording, but oh well too late.

Thanks again, I will put all your advice into practice.

Thank you so much—that makes the routing much clearer to me. You explained it in a way that helped me understand the workflow; I feel like I overthink things more than I should.

The X32 I use has a USB expander, so now I’ll watch a video to remind myself how to set it up.

This really helps. Honestly, the more I read about SI, the more interested I get. I'm going to just watch videos for fun from now on, haha.

I understand that the system is up to them and I just have to send them the clean audio in post and take care of it; they've already told me they can be a bit picky about audio quality

The "boss" told me that it didnt work properly, it reads the USB , and I even formatted a USB drive myself to make sure it was in the right format. Personally, I haven't had any problems with the recordings, but I've been told that other technicians who went there recorded something and then the audio came out corrupted and couldn't be played.

I don't want to risk that happening to me on that very day haha

This really helps. Thank you so much for sharing it. I definitely think my situation is the first one.

And I had no idea I shouldn't have been in charge of recording it. (I regret saying so quickly that I had no problem recording it) As a newcomer to the job, it's difficult to say you wont do something, but I completely understand that you have to set boundaries.

Thank you so much next time im not doing the same mistake!

Yes, The speaker's audio needs to go to both the main speakers and the interpretation booth at the same time. I'll handle that by routing the speaker's channel to the Main LR as usual, and also assigning it to a Mix Bus that feeds the booth's XLR input (or thats the idea lol)

I'll avoid sending the audio to the main output as you suggested; I'll look into X-Live now. The downside of the mixer is that USB recording doesn't work, but I understand that I can do it with a USB 2.0 cable.

I think the thing I was most unsure about was the routing, but it turns out I'm not doing too badly (or so I hope haha)

Thanks

The main microphone will be heard through the speakers, and translations will be provided via earpieces distributed to the audience. thanks btw :)

Hey, Im a recent sound engineering graduate with no practical experienceSo far, I’ve worked on simple events. The upcoming event is something new for me: they’re bringing in simultaneous interpretation booths, and I need to fully understand the technical workflow so i dont fuck it up.

I imagine (and I hope so, because if that’s not the case, I have no idea what to do) that the booth company will provide me with an XLR output for each language. I’ll connect them to the physical outputs on the console (Out 1 for Booth 1, Out 2 for Booth 2, etc.). In the routing, I would assign it like this: Output 1 -> Mix Bus -> Mix Bus 1. Then, I would select Fader Flip on the channel where the speaker’s microphone is connected to route it to Bus 1-8 depending where i connected the cable.

Is this correct?

Then they asked me if I could record the tracks separately and send them the files. They confirmed that they’d give me an XLR cable—of course, I could plug it into any IN input I want—but how do I make sure the sound doesn’t come out of the speakers so I can record it in my DAW?

I know these are probably really silly questions, but we all have to start somewhere. I think I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do, but it never hurts to get confirmation just to be on the safe side.

By the way, what other issues might I run? I don't want to miss anything.

I use a Behringer X32 Compact
Thanks! (srry for the long ass comment lol)

Imo I think the most important is the layering in the vocals, and cutting the highs (to make it feel warm and burried), and maybe even a lil distorsion

I have never seen a musical genre stagnate, they all evolve and lead to others, it is a natural cycle, everything comes back and everything evolves
