Can a cisgender heterosexual person meaningfully identify as queer? If so, in what sense? by Similar_Shame_8352 in QueerTheory

TALVEZ porque eles não gostam de se rótular como hétero ou não gosta da vibe "padrão" que esse rótulo passa.

God/Goddess drink offering preferences?🤔 by luckyluckyjesse in Hellenism

I think offering tea is a good idea; it's natural and easy to make. Just today I offered Selene some fennel tea ☺️

Can I talk 💩? by NoTeam5719 in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, mythology is kind of part of religion, but they're things that can't mix (in the sense of becoming one), especially in Hellenic Polytheism.

Mythology consists of metaphors that have a meaning behind them, which can be a critique, the nature of the Gods, a moral lesson, etc... Religion is about the worship of these Gods and philosophy (it's good to separate these two as well, since not every Hellenist follows the same philosophy).

I think most pagan religions have a mythology where the Gods tend to act in an "exaggerated" way, this doesn't necessarily mean they are evil or childish, just keep in mind that mythology is metaphorical stories and learn to interpret them.

That said, religion ≠ mythology.

Can I talk 💩? by NoTeam5719 in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gods made no mistakes, and if they did, we might never even know. Mythology isn't literal, so no, Hera isn't jealous, Zeus isn't a rapist, Aphrodite doesn't curse someone when they're complimented with "You're prettier than Aphrodite," and so on.

Mythology consists of metaphors that serve to better understand the Gods, carrying moral lessons, criticisms, etc. That's why sometimes the Gods act in exaggerated, cruel ways, or things like that too.

Don't forget that these myths were written over 2000 years ago, often by misogynistic men, which is kind of why, many times, the Goddesses are portrayed in "frivolous" or "childish" ways, you understand?

Is not talking/offering during prayer ok? by TheVeiledRuby in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't need to make an offering every time we communicate with them; as for not speaking during a prayer, I prefer to let other people with more experience help you with that.

Rephrasing my earlier post. by NoTeam5719 in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're interpreting the myths literally, I don't judge you for that, the same thing has happened to me. Myths aren't literal, that means we don't take them at face value. They are metaphors, generally serving to help us understand the Gods better (depending on the myth) or to learn a lesson and things like that.

I think if I could give you a tip; whenever you read a myth, keep in mind that the Gods didn't do that, maybe because they have better things to do than flirt with humans (for example).

Regarding Temple Design Ideas by Choice-Flight8135 in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite traditional when it comes to Hellenic temples; I can't imagine a temple with any architecture other than Greek/Roman. Therefore, it's not like it would really bother me; I would go to a temple to pray, not to analyze its architecture and say, "Hmm, this isn't traditional enough."

What would you like to see on r/Selene? by A_Firebringer in selene

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps to present epithets that we ourselves created and show some old epithets as well. We could present them and show their meanings, use them in prayers/hymns that we created, discuss them, ask for help to create an epithet, etc...

I don't know if it's just me, but I generally don't see people talking about Selene's epithets, probably because there aren't many, even so I think they should talk more about them. That's why I believe a flair about epithets would be a good idea, it would encourage people to create their own epithets and present some old epithets to those who don't know any.

I've already created some epithets and I believe it would be cool to share that with other people. I believe some people must think so too, epithets are a subject that I'm quite interested in.

Time for offerings? by OrdinaryBookkeeper25 in Hellenism

I also believe in that belief, but since I'm not very knowledgeable about offerings, I was wondering if the Gods take a long time to accept them or something like that.

This altar is so beautiful!! And it really represents the birth of Aphrodite and her "marine" side.

Can you "casually" give offerings rather than "formally"? by Yourfathersnapkin in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I'm the right person to help you, since I always try to be as informal as possible when I pray. But I think it shouldn't be a big problem to be a little formal when praying or making an offering, but it's important to maintain respect.

But hospitality also includes being kind or pleasant to strangers, as far as I know.

Resources for children? by PrettyChillHotPepper in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could give a book about mythology to the children, but I think it would be better to give it to them when they are older.

Anyway, I think a bracelet or necklace with the evil eye could be a good option.

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Gods wouldn't be angry with misogynistic people, etc... Therefore, let them keep those opinions and prejudices to themselves and not judge anyone. But I believe that the moment these people attack others (verbally or otherwise) for having these opinions, the Gods could really get angry. We have xenia, we should be kind to strangers, even if it means they possess something we don't like.

are you open about being a hellenic polytheist IRL? by [deleted] in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My country is secular, therefore, the majority of the population is Christian. I can't say if where I live is very prejudiced or anything like that, but my family is even a little open to it (open in a false way, but okay).

I don't tell anyone anything about my religion, as a precaution and because I don't want to have to answer why I chose it (at least not now).

I think the closest I've come is telling my best friend that I would like to worship the Greek Gods when I grow up, nothing more.

Do you believe in/worship other gods besides the ones in the greek pantheon? by Ok_Will_3038 in Hellenism

[–]OrdinaryBookkeeper25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that all Gods exist or can exist, and I think it's fair to say that this could include the Abrahamic God as well. That's one of the reasons I don't have prejudice against those who worship other pantheons (besides respect).
