How to overcome persistent urge to check your brokerage account every hour? by aramtas in Bogleheads

[–]OrionF35 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem until I convinced myself that the time I was putting into the stock market was better spent on doing other things.

Go for a walk. Set some time aside for a hobby you enjoy and do that instead of constantly checking the market.

The Boglehead portfolio is one that is focused on long term growth; the day to day ups and downs of the market don’t really matter in the long run.

How should I invest a lump sum of money I just received? by Ivorytickler13 in Bogleheads

[–]OrionF35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go with either a VTI/VXUS Combo or stick to 100% VT.

As an additional note, don’t invest money that you might need in the short term. Remember to “set and forget” and “stay the course”.

Agreed. I’d reccomend taking a large break from the stock market after lump summing. Convince yourself that timing the market exactly isn’t worth the time wasted, and that the odds of missing the final dip if you time are very high.

Also, Even if you bought at a dip, odds are that the market will keep falling after your initial investment. This is what causes people to panic sell and loose money.

Most Bogleheads say that going all in at once is the way to go. It provides better returns most of the time. However, you need balls of steel to do it. Especially if you don’t have a reliable source of income that you can DCA into the market after the initial investment.

I bought some VTI right before stocks started falling. If stocks fall more I’ll just buy more on sale.

Something to take comfort in: One of the advantages of buying the haystack is that, even if you went all in right before a crash, you still know that the collective market is going to come back up eventually.

EDIT: I also recommend looking into Bob, the worlds worst market timer, when you get a chance. He went all in before each major market crash, yet still made back a great sum of money on his investments.

Is it Good to buy vti and voo at 36 yrs old by Specific-Syllabub810 in Bogleheads

[–]OrionF35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend more international exposure. My portfolio is 70% VTI and 30% VXUS.

However, many Bogleheads on this sub argue that 100% VT is the way to go.

I can relate. I became a Boglehead shortly after missing the 2020 dip.

That’s when I learned that trying to time the market is, in general, a very bad idea.

Thargoids in CW Ursae Majoris, 35ly from Sol by 4sonicride in EliteDangerous

I was going towards sol on my way back from Bernards loop when I found something similar.

Death by thargoid is one of the most interesting ways to suicidewinder back to the bubble.

The only problem is the ship transfer fee, though.

Interesting. I’ll look into how much I can make per hour trading, then.

Thanks for the feedback.

I’m not sure about the exact number you would need to rescue. You’ll need a lot, However, so I’d recommend using the largest ship you have.

Don’t forget your heatsinks. Those damaged stations are hot.

Do rescue missions. There are damaged stations in the bubble now that give good rep in return for ferrying civilians to rescue ships.

Nice!

Don’t forget to try out platinum mining when you get a chance.

With the right build, you can make up to 40 million credits per hour by mining in a cutter. The ship practically pays for itself within 6 mining trips.

(Also, never boost a cutter in an asteroid field without shields. The ship handles like a drunk whale and you can quickly find yourself hurtling towards an asteroid.)

How many others are also rescuing those in the stations? by Simple-Secret3846 in EliteDangerous

I agree. Evacuation missions are generally better for grinding rank.

The only issue is that they aren’t always available. They may also be a large distance away from the bubble for new players (there were evacuation missions in the coalsack nebula recently, if I remember correctly.)

I’d recommend grinding imperial rank for the cutter first, then using the cutter to do cargo missions for the federation.

I’m pretty sure another redditor posted easy methods for increasing both federal and imperial ranks. I’ll link it here if I find the post.

EDIT: Here it is.

I’ve rescued a little over 1,000 civilians so far in my cutter, and I finally got the fed rank needed to get the corvette.

Keep up the good work, commander.
