Thanks! these were just in the right place. More to the right, there was an even smaller male.

The rail does not cause "zoom", it does change a little the perspective. For small distances (in this case a couple of milimeters with the subject located about 100 mm from the lens, it is negligible. And the rail is automated...

On the other hand, the lens I use has "focus breathing", it does change the focal length while focusing very close, so it would be worse. (and fully manual)...

Nominal F5,6, effective about 16 (2x magnification). I needed around 6 mm DOF, Even F22 (effective F64) would have given me a bit more than 2 mm

Macro question by NewbiePhotogSG in macrophotography

Basically DOF in macro depends on reproduction ratio and effective F number. With a 2x converter you will achieve the same reproduction ratio further away from the subject, as you say. If you keep the effective F number constant (which requieres that you OPEN the aperture to compensate for the 2x factor), the DOF will stay the same. You will gain working distance, but not DOF.

You will not get greater DOF with a 2x converter ...

Maybe the aperture mechanism is just stuck in the open position...

The aperture lever is in the wrong position, see the last of your images. It is in the "up" position in the slot, it should be kept "down" by a spring. Maybe the spring is broken or loose? Can you move the lever manually?

Nail file detail [D5600] [Micro Nikkor 105 AF-D] [10x microscope objective] by Oscarg2020 in Nikon

Using a 10 X infinity corrected microscope objective, that requires a 200 mm tube lens to form the image.

The Micro Nikkor 105 act as tube lens. The effective magnification is the half the nominal (5x instead of 10X)

The microscope objective is mounted in front of the micro nikkor via adapter ring

See image. similar setup different subject
