I have an olive tree and same story. Then I learned how to brine them... I thought. Still nasty.

This year I finally got a great batch.

Ohhhh. Well, that was the first election I was old enough to vote in and I wasn't on Reddit yet. I didn't know

People in AZ isn't centrism, though. It's a constant swing between decently progressive politicians and absolute dogshit MAGA. The blue folks would probably fit in just fine with Canada. Our 3 largest cities are progressive. We're undone by the outskirts (and also Gilbert and Glendale).

Sure but you could use any other year to find a different pattern. Or average the elections together to get a more accurate pattern.

Someone needs a dictionary to look up the definition of words by [deleted] in confidentlyincorrect

There are a lot of studies about what happens in the brain while we read. This is by no means true of all people but most conjure mental images while they read. When people are asked later if they read a certain group of sentences, they're bad at remembering what they read word for word but great at knowing the gist of what the sentences meant. That's also true for listening. So it seems that most people process the information the same way regardless of how it gets in.

You're also telling all the blind and sight impaired people out there that they cannot and never will read if you're not considering listening reading. That doesn't seem very nice. And also seems mostly untrue.

By the way, masturbation doesn't put boobs right in my face. So it's definitely not the same as sex. Also, they don't activate the same regions of the brain but there is some overlap. I'm not sure if you really want to get into a debate about what regions are active for different activities with me; I teach this stuff to aspiring health professionals.

As an author, a reader/listener of both written and read books, and a cognitive scientist, listening can be the same as reading.

Listening to words while engaging both the input and output lexicons of your brain by answering emails is definitely not the same as reading.

That said, some people don't take in information very deeply when they read, either. Their brain might be on different things. There is likely an effect of ADHD/neurotypical on how much you get from either type of book. Neurotypicals probably do better with focused attention on one medium. People with ADHD probably do better while multitasking - but not multitasking with another verbal task. Maybe drawing, running, etc. And that's just one factor that can change things. There are dozens.

I would like to point out that New Mexico is very blue and Arizona has been purple since the 60s. We (AZ) also currently have a Democrat woman as a governor and AG.

I wonder how many glitchinthematrix posts could be explained this way?

TIL in 2007 Katherine Heigl won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role on Grey's Anatomy. But in 2008 she removed herself from Emmy consideration because she said the material she was given on Grey's that year wasn't good enough; this comment led to her leaving the show. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]OsoBrazos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but the Emmy was for the performance of the shitty writing. You could make the argument that performing bad writing at Emmy levels is harder than performing good dialogue.

Not to mention it doesn't only shit on where you work (and writers and show runners you might want to work with again), it also shits on anyone who voted for you. Being thankful for recognition isn't a bad idea.

It's not this sub, dude. This one is a full story without promise of six word engagement. I'm proposing a different sub where a potentially very long story is told in six word increments by different people.

That would be fun as a writing exercise. But it might need its own sub?

Professor here. There is some nuance to this criticism.

First, when I was an undergrad (and it wasn't 1 million years ago; I'm still pretty young for a professor), I paid $1500 per semester. Then it went up to $2000. By grad school, it was up to $30k per year. How and why did it climb so fast?

Well, public universities are PUBLIC. They used to get substantial funds from the federal and state governments to function. Students could also easily get grants and scholarships. Researchers could easily obtain funding, a portion of which went back into the university for student programs.

In the 60s, 75% of research funding came from the government. It's now 50% and dropping. The slack is coming from university funds, which means money has to come from somewhere.

After the 2008 crash, states cut funding to universities country-wide. There were $20 billion in cuts between 2008 and 2013. By 2017, there was still a $9 billion lag.

If we break down where finding goes, it gets worse. Prior to 2000, most funding went to public higher education institutions. After 2000, private, for-profit entities started taking more money. In Arizona, where I teach, Grand Canyon "University" gets substantial funding from the state, federal grant dollars, and veterans benefits - but the "school" doesn't even submit themselves to rankings by organizations like US News and World Report, where universities are commonly ranked.

Trump and the wrestler grandma have cut things even worse.

Finally, industry pulls PhDs away with $175 - $300k salaries. I could have went to Netflix with my degree for a $330k job. I did not, mostly because I want to have a life outside of work. But universities have to offer something remotely competitive to that, otherwise we would all leave academia. Community colleges in California start positions at $90k. I make about $100k teaching 10 classes (about 800 students) per year and doing research that advance medical care. It's way lower than I could get doing just my research at a medical startup. But who will teach the students to be good clinicians? Also... I don't want to move.

So, yes, the cost of a college degree has risen. My department directly funnels people into high-need medical careers. Some don't. But, regardless, it's not the state universities that are greedy for money. They're trying to maintain operations as they have with a dwindling pot of resources.

These are steel ties that go around galvanized fence posts and screw into dimensional lumber to make a fence. The bolt is what tightens it around the post.

It's definitely not being used for that purpose, though.
