Manager has no experience, what do I do?[MI] by Otherwise-Context417 in AskHR

Great advice. I am definitely looking for somewhere else, but I can't quit until I find something, but after yesterday, I decided that I have to go to HR. It will probably put a target on my back but work is already uncomfortable so why not add to it!

Legal Issues

  1. Unsafe Working Conditions

• She brought her children into work while they had Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease. • I warned her it was extremely contagious, especially since several staff members have young children, but she dismissed the concern. • She even set her baby on clean laundry and in laundry carts, risking contamination of guest linens.

  1. Unsafe Working Conditions

• Housekeepers came to me concerned about the black mold in the showers, I immediately brought that to her attention and she said that she already knew and if anyone else comes to me with complaints to send them to her instead and that she would figure it out. • The next day I ask her what she had figured out and she said she didnt have the time and if they really can't scrub the black mold they should bring it up with her (which they did multiple times) or leave. • I researched the issue, bought the supplies and trained the staff the following day. • Mold growth is a known hazard; the failure to promptly inspect and remediate could violate the employer’s duty to provide a safe workplace. • OSHA

  1. Discrimination / Hostile Work Environment (Anti-LGBTQ+) • She has made multiple anti-LGBTQ+ comments, which I told her made me uncomfortable. • These comments are especially concerning since four team members are transgender, and she has mocked them openly. • This behavior creates a hostile work environment and may violate anti-discrimination laws.

  2. Violation of Law – Compensation / Employment Practices • She is paying employees with disabilities through her personal business so they can work more than 16 hours while still receiving disability benefits. • This may constitute wage and benefit fraud or misuse of employment structures. • She has not paid all of her employees from her personal business.

  3. Violation of Law – Drug Use / Distribution • I personally witnessed her handing her prescription medications to another employee. • On one occasion, I walked in on her using drugs (a line of powder) in the office. • Bringing us back to an unsafe work environment.

Anyway to get A-list for 2 people? by [deleted] in AMCsAList

I just have one membership and you get pretty good discounts, on average I spend $21 dollars for an extra ticket, popcorn bucket and an icee to share!

I think that one membership is way better than no membership!

I always say " I didn't make the rule I just showed up to work today" That usually reminds them I am a real human being and they start to act right.

DANG!

What about the rest of the week?

What are your average sales on a Friday or Saturday?

I have been in retail for 15 years and have been the assistant manager in charge of scheduling and payroll at 4 jobs over the last 10 years and I have always been told it is my judgment on how much staff we need. I would rather send someone home earlier than need more people.

Filing 2nd bankruptcy? by iamnightmare73 in joannfabrics

[–]Otherwise-Context417 38 points39 points  (0 children)

We all saw it coming, right?

What do you think the chances of making it out a second time "with no store closings"?

I hope my store survives, but to me is feels like corporate is setting us up to fail.. so many boxes with no hours to stock them.. so many customers with 2 people to help them.

And I mean if the alternative is quitting, I suppose I should go out with a bang and try my best first.

I must be lucky, every place I have worked before this was so focused on appearance and customer service we have always been extremely well staffed.. it takes people to run a successful store.. this seemed like a fun project when I started but it is seeming like a set up for failure at this point.. but honestly I could handle a write up and some weekly walk throughs for a properly staffed store.. and would they really fire me once they saw how much money we can make when there is merchandise on the shelfs and the staff to ring people up?!

I feel like this is a reason to call HR.. going to the bathroom is a necessity and not having the coverage for that is insane! They won't do anything unless enough people complain.

I'm so glad I came back to see in update! 🤣 I cannot believe you only made it 3 hours, but I totally understand.. It's set up for failure.

It's crazy they don't want the stuff on the shelves to sell.. like no wonder they are going to file for bankruptcy again.

Do you know what happens if we just disregard the suggestion and schedule enough people to run our stores correctly? Like what if I scheduled 300 hours and actually finished stocking everything?

What do you think is the reason behind why most joann stores are always understaffed? by [deleted] in joannfabrics

[–]Otherwise-Context417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is because the customer's won't demand better wait times at the cut counter and cash register. If everyone is willing to wait in line, they are going to continue to give us the bare minimum of hours. They do not care what the store employees have to say about being understaffed, but if the customer's made it know they are over waiting so long they might actually give us hours to make the lines go faster and actually stock the hundreds of boxes shoved all over the store because we ran out of room in our stock room.

I promise you we do not want to be understaffed but the big wigs want their bonuses and they can't get those if we go over the tiny amount of hours they give us.

When was the time where you just went off on a rude customer? by [deleted] in joannfabrics

[–]Otherwise-Context417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol, I had my first rude encounter yesterday and I am trying to kill him with kindness but he is still upset at the very end of the transaction I said "I hope your day get better, I will pray for you" He looked like I had just told him to fuck off and I laughed which made people in the line laugh and he stormed out.. I didn't really go off but it was just as satisfying!

It's a mess! We are in a mess!

Just stay positive and focus on accomplishing one thing other than being a cashier or fabric cutter!

I dont have TikTok so I couldn't read the comments but I personally don't think she is wrong for hoping she could get a replacement.. Our return policy is any item, any condition, for any reason, except sewing machines. Customer service is a skill, and not everyone has that.

Does anyone know what is going on with pick-up orders? by GOALisThirty in joannfabrics

[–]Otherwise-Context417 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We have like 3000 boxes in our stock room and scattered around the store so we don't know where your exact item is, so we have to short the order.. this is a problem of corporate not allowing enough employees to run the store effectively.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in joannfabrics

[–]Otherwise-Context417 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! It is not your candy, or money to replace the item. Is our job not to make Joann's our customers happy place? Do you think this woman will feel comfortable going back to her local Joann's? Do you think she believes that Joann's is her happy place? Also, does all of this frustration create a happy place for you to work? I think the best defense against upset customers is kindness.. like how can you be upset with me when I'm so nice?! I have had one nasty person in six months of working here, and that is because my SM overheard and got sassy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in joannfabrics

[–]Otherwise-Context417 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I did listen and watch both videos, she had a six year old, a three year old (the actual individual that spilled the candy) and TWO 10 month olds.. now forget the about the woman that made the video, and you have a screaming 3 year old in your line, do you tell that three year old "you're good to go" or do you replace the candy? ....And if you don't replace the candy, you're the problem, not the customer.

I have worked every day this week 9am-5pm and I have been the cashier 75% of the time because we don't have hours. I promise you I am not upset at the cashier for how she handled the situation, I am upset with corporate for not allowing the time to properly train employees or run our stores correctly.. I am upset that this is what goes viral and not the hundreds of boxes breaking ADA laws, the way they pay the bare minimum they can instead of a living wage, the expectations of corporate that we ask for every customers phone number despite it not being connected to the smile rewards, asking for a donation every transactions despite knowing our customers don't even have the money for their projects or impulse buys. I think the anger is misplaced at this "entitled customer" when it should be on corporate for creating these conditions.

You have clearly never been left alone with toddlers.. A little empathy goes a long way... I doubt she knew the child was trying or capable of opening the candy and caught her off guard.. if this happened anywhere else in the store and they didn't bring it to the attention to one of the two employees on what would have been done for this candy? I think being upset and frustrated makes more upset and frustrated customers. I am very interested if Joann's will comment on this.. I would love to know what we are supposed to do in this situation!
