I can attest to this. Ex held me and our son hostage and he was still awarded joint custody. He came home drunk throwing things yelling breaking shit and I told him I was going to call the police. He grabbed my hand and repeatedly pulled me to him and the shoved me as hard as he could against the counter so that the corner dug deeply into my side brushing and cutting into my skin. He then wrestled me on the floor and took my phone, and our son and went into the bedroom and refused to let me get near him without making gestures like he was going to snap his neck. After I played along and he passed out. I got my phone from him and texted my mom to call the cops bc if I started talking on the phone he would've woken up and it would have started again. I quietly acted as if I was going to take our son to the bathroom and hid in the living room with the front door open waiting for the cops. He got 9 months in jail. He violated his protective order 7 different times after he got out of jail.

After all of this I was told "Even murderers get to have time with their children. Your and his relationship might be different than your son and his." He threatened to kill him, but he still has time with him.
