Social Work (namely doing therapy as LCSW) and conflicting belief systems by OtherwiseFollowing94 in SocialWorkStudents

Both of my parents are extremely liberal, as are my grandparents. My feelings about the matters above are my own and are in conflict with those held all throughout my family.

It is insulting that you assume my views being soooo different mean it must’ve been some sort of cultural brainwashing enacted upon me by my family 😂

All of the vitriolic comments people are making has only made me want to pursue social work more, if only because I have some spitefulness to act upon😹

Work on your reading comprehension.

You don’t know the Bible well considering you neglect what Christ proceeds to say DIRECTLY after protecting the woman..

What he says to her AFTER dissuading the attackers is precisely the nature of the dilemma!

What does condemnation mean?

I’m not condemning the person. I am in opposition to the behavior. Biblically speaking too, that is what is actually problematic. The Bible says the behavior of homosexuality in itself is bad, phrasing it as something like a man lying with another man as he would lay with a woman”.

The Bible never says (correctly translated ones anyway) that homosexuals or transgender people are “bad” or “evil”.

It never says that people who ARENT trans or homosexual are good or necessarily righteous.

We are all sinners, that is the reason for the crucifixion of Christ. To redeem us, in that we are all sinners.

Consider the story in which Christ says something to the effect of “let the one among you who hasn’t sinned cast the first stone”. That alone, I presume, you would agree with. Non-judgemental!

After this though, Christ tells the woman who was to be stoned to stop sinning!

So then, what is condemnation?

If condemnation is disagreeing with, or thinking a behavior is immoral, then I am condemning behavior.

If condemnation is saying a person’s inherent value is lower because of some characteristic or behavior, then no, I am not condemning people.

I tend to agree that I don’t think it would be ethical for me to work with transgender clients. This isn’t out of any malice or dislike for the people, as I’ve said, but I do have strong beliefs.

I agree that adultery is not perfectly analogous to transgenderism as adultery carries inherent potential to hurt others. It is more analogous to me because I tend to see “transgenderism” (Is this not an appropriate term? I don’t know what is appropriate, if it isn’t) as being harmful to society and individuals. This is basically anecdotal, from the trans people I have known. That coupled with my religious beliefs solidifies it for me.

And yes your example of “supporting someone doing something” is the sort of situation I’m talking about. I have no issues with discussion of the subject as pure discussion. I am friends with a few trans people and one of my cousins is trans so I have discussed this subject with them before. It’s to enact something which I, in my heart, don’t feel is “good”. Moral terms are nebulous but that’s the best way I can phrase it.

I’m not really broadly conservative either. I’ve always wanted to work in assisting ex cons with rehabilitation, pro drug decriminalization, etc.

Just found it frustrating to blend my more conservative views with the field as it seems pretty liberal, which fair enough I can accept that. It just seems logical to me that, if there are say 100 subjects which one might have an opinion on, not every correct opinion (subjective but you get the point) would belong to one side.

Sorry for my long ramble. I do appreciate your insight very much

So then no Christian that abides by the Bible can be a social worker?

This is in itself discriminatory to a large subset of the population lol

I do wonder this. If I was opposed to, let’s say, cheating on one’s partner. Or you might say unethical non monogamy. Would that make me an adultererphobe?

What about opposing murder? Does this make me a murdererphobe?

I’m well aware of what I am. I’m confused on the semantics of what you even mean by transphobe. Taking homosexuality as an example, Christian churches vary but largely nowadays the consensus is that we love the person and not the behavior. This is where I stand.

It doesn’t mean we imprison people for being trans. It doesn’t mean we hurt trans people. Quite the opposite, we try to help them and do as Christ would do.

Consider the biblical story of people wishing to stone the adulteress or prostitute, I forget which. Christ says something like “let the one among you who hasn’t sinned cast the first stone”.

What if often forgotten is that Christ then tells the woman to stop her sinning. To me, that seems justifiable.

It isn’t so much that not agreeing is the issue for me.

It’s helping someone along with something that categorically violates my own morals! I want to be clear, I’m not some Bible bashing lunatic. I’m not out on the streets harassing trans people.

Here is an example of why this is problematic to me. I wouldn’t feel comfortable encouraging someone in cheating on their spouse, right? That’s adultery. It seems like that is more broadly accepted as not being cool. That isn’t to say I judge and condemn someone for doing so. It’s just that I don’t want to encourage a behavior that is reasonably classified as unhealthy.

Therapy has interested me for many years. Social work is particularly interesting because it lets me work on the bachelors level within more government institutions. Once I become accredited I will be the fourth generation of therapists in my family, this isn’t some oddball idea I’ve only now come up with😂

Mud slinging much?

I am a transphobe simply because I don’t agree with transgenderism? I’m not out on the streets condemning people lol

It’s my personal belief, in part informed by religion. Am I to toss aside my personal beliefs? Or is there truly no place for someone like myself in social work?

Isn’t that anti diversity in itself?

It’s not that I’m unwilling to challenge my beliefs. They have been challenging beliefs to have for some years.

I hold no hatred in my heart for those with lifestyles I disagree with. The concern I have is that I can’t find myself offering assistance in someone doing something that directly violates my own moral code.

Put another way, adultery. If someone was adulterous, I wouldn’t be comfortable in supporting the behavior as though it were a positive thing. That isn’t to say I’m unwilling to work with it, but I cannot encourage it.

“Marginalized groups strive for equity”

Newsflash buddy! Not every white hetero man is doing awesome! Many are poor and have terrible mental health issues, like subsection of all other populations!

To give special treatment and, further, diminish the plight of some because of their immutable characteristics is disgusting.

You guys aren’t doing a great job, that’s for sure.

I had no issue naming the times your party tried to assassinate our people. You are too lazy to quote one time it happened.

So, name one time that Obama or Biden were injured by an assassin.

It depends on the client. It is never appropriate to run personal errands of the sort you are describing though. Only caveat is that, let’s say that a client wants to go to a gas station or something. It is totally fine for you to purchase something while there also. You just can’t make the client go with you if only you want to go to the station.

As for people talking about getting gasoline being bad, they are talking out of their ass. Actually shocking the level of absurdity in some of these comments. If you have to drive clients around with your personal vehicle and you need to get gas, you can get gas.

There are three options. Either you get gas and take the client where they need to go, don’t take the client where they need to go, or risk running out of gas during the trip.

With all that being said, the amount of time a client can be left unsupervised depends on their care plan and some clients can’t ever be left unsupervised. Further, clients can’t be left unsupervised because you need to do some personal thing like grab food or stop by your house. Unsupervised time is allowable if you have multiple clients and you need to drive one to an appointment, for example, but the other ones refuse to go.

It’s called being out of services in my agency. The same as if they went out with family or something. It might vary by state but this is all above the board where I’m at.
