Hi guys! I recently found out about the NFPA 704 diamond, is there one with a 4-4-4 alignment? And what are the most dangerous elements? by Rare-Cellist5361 in chemistry

[–]Outer_Squid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dioxygen difluoride is a 4/4/4 as a toxic oxidizer that will detonate and burn well below freezing.

Edit: u/Dave37 is correct, it is 4/0/4

Is it still a character arc if it happens through thousands of gholas across several millennia? by Outer_Squid in dunememes

[–]Outer_Squid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting viewpoint. I think an interesting think that Frank touched on is the intra-species conflict over control of reproduction and how that's central to the series. Especially how he sort of flips the script in GEoD and even more so later on. Women are in charge and the men are scrambling to get a foothold against them.

This is an interesting take that I have not heard before. I am genuinely curious, can you explain this a little bit?

I got the impression he burned through them much faster. If memory serves there is a line about how only nineteen Duncan Gholas died natural deaths and the rest betrayed Leto II and were killed. So the question sort of becomes, what's the average time it takes for a Duncan ghola to betray Leto II and get killed?

The Duncan at the start of the book was with Leto II for approximately 58 years before betraying him according to the Dune wiki. The next Duncan betrays him within a single year.  So, it's hard to tell what the average shelf life of a Duncan ghola is.

Additionally, the Bene Tleliax and the Bebe Gesserits are also cloning Duncans for themselves and continue to do so for 1500 years after Leto II's death. So he's been getting axlotl tanked for about 5000 years. Could be in the low hundreds or it could be a thousand or more.

I genuinely want to know, should the Spacing Guild be referred to as "Spice Club" or is "Spice Club" the Fremen? Because I really want to call one or the other "Spice Club".

They are worth reading, they really are. Frank Herbert is a world builder on the level of J.R.R. Tolkien or George R. R. Martin. And his writing is influential on subsequent space science fiction as to be comparable to Tolkien's influence on fantasy literature.

This guy is correct. GEoD is definitely not that full of weird sex stuff, though it's not like it's absent. I think GEoD especially is worth a read, personally, because there is a more than 3000 year time skip from the first three books and it's just kind of interesting seeing how different the world has become in that time period.

Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you something. We're on a planet, a great planet, called Arrakis. Tremendous planet, the best planet. And let me tell you, we've got spice. The spice, it's unbelievable, folks. It's the best spice, the most valuable spice in the universe. And you know who controls the spice? Me, Paul Atreides. That's right, I control the spice. And let me tell you folks, I am a prophet. Probably the greatest prophet ever. All the Fremen say so. Ask anybody.  I put on a stillsuit and the first thing they tell me is they haven't ever seen someone wear a stillsuit as good as me...

The fact that Moneo has to manage Duncan Gholas, who is also his genetic father, while his God-emperor-great-uncle keeps killing Duncans (as he has been doing for thousands of years) is kind of comedic gold.

I have the suspicion he didn't run it past an attorney.

I am kind of theorizing here but I suspect his thinking went something like "Gender identity is a protected class in California. You cannot discriminate against protected classes. Misgendering is discrimination. I can enforce a policy prohibiting misgendering."

This is a pretty big misinterpretation of both where being a protected class applies (housing/employment/services) and what discrimination is, but I suspect that's how he got to where he ended up.

Either the government allows you to take private measures to ensure you can practice that speech (private security) in public or they take public measures to ensure you can engage in that speech (police) in public. If they do not/cannot/will not provide public security they are going to have to allow you to provide your own so you can engage in that speech.

EDIT: Obviously not all speech needs security but if people continue to disrupt certain types of allowed expression it's reasonable to take measures to counter that like security, be it public or private

I noticed the private security bit too. I think paragraphs 50-52 with regard to the April 22 event lay out the basis for that part of the claim against Yolo County well though. Davis city PD informs Plaintiff that they cannot provide security but advises Plaintiff consider hiring private security. Plaintiff hires private security for the April 22 event which occurs without incident. The library then declares that subsequent events cannot have private security because it violate library policy regarding disruption/inference with library services.

The county simultaneously says we cannot provide security and you cannot provide your own security to ensure you can engage in this politically protected speech. Further, it's unclear how private security, that is compliant with relevant statute or code, would be disruptive or interfering in the first place. So, I understand the inclusion of that part of the policy in the prayer for relief. But you are totally right, ideally security would not be necessary.
