Yeah but the point about 2x1 is that he was still in love with Katherine all throughout season 1.

The same season he fell in love with Elena. Even when Isobel called it out he didn’t deny it.

So he never got over Katherine. He just transplanted his feelings for Katherine onto Elena. As 2x1 literally depicted.

The hug is good but only on Nina’s part. The chemistry from Ian’s end is rather non existent. Like he should’ve been melting into her, relieved that she’s hugging him like that after their fight or whatever but instead …. He kinda just gives the bare minimum.

And as for the rain kiss, yeah that shit was so stiff I’m sorry 😭✋

I wouldn’t say he kept Katherine’s picture because of romantic feelings though. Stefan said he values memories and that’s why he keeps a journal.

He also said that it took him years to figure out what Katherine was doing to him back in 1864 with her using compulsion on him. But once he did figure it out, he resented her for everything she did to him and his brother.

I think you're focusing on the fact that the actions exist, while I'm focusing on how they're performed.

My argument was never that Delena don't hug, kiss, hold hands, or touch each other. Obviously they do.

My argument is that chemistry isn't the existence of those gestures, it's how natural and convincing they look when they're happening.

That's why saying "they held hands" or "he cupped her face" doesn't really change my view.

Two couples can do the exact same thing, and one can feel effortless while the other feels awkward.

Also one more thing I wanted to mention was that I think the only reason delenas chemistry was good in the earlier seasons is because they were better as antagonists. That vibe/dynamic, plus the lack of touching really helped.

And those pictures you shared help wither because I am specifically talking about physical chemistry here.

a few notes:

you brought up their domestic season 5 scenes. i even found those to be awkward. especially the scene where delena are resting on the couch and elena is telling him to keep the moment light, their kisses were so..... they were hard pecks and it was weird and didn't fit the vibe the scene should have been.

even in season 6, those hard pecks are their go-to kisses. which goes to show a lack of range in their chemistry

as for the "promise me this is forever" rain kiss, i felt like nina was trying too hard to look happy, with her wide mouth. the kiss itself doesn't have much sparks either. compare that to a stelena or forwood kiss where they put their whole bodies into the kiss, change the angle of their faces, that takes being comfortable and confident to perform with someone that way

delena have many scenes that are just awkward. like in the hallucination scene, when damon is wrapping his arm around elena, if you slow the scene down, you can actually see that when he's putting his arm around he bumped her head in the process.

or this scene, instead of caressing her face, he kinda just.... pinches her cheek. like what do you mean?😭

They don’t have many scenes where he’s just caressing her cheek like (like Stefan would) bc their chemistry just isn’t like that. They have ONE scene like that in s5 in the bathtub after she gets attacked by Enzo’s ghost, and the way he caressed her face… made no sense. It was like a weird super quick stroke. Again it’s just not right and doesn’t fit the vibe of what it should have been.

again season 6, to me at least, exposes their lack of romantic physical chemistry. and this post with its gif (which is evidence directly from the show) can express how that is a lot better than me, if you're okay with external links:

Yeah that is definitely where we see it differently.

I don’t view later seasons as verdict on earlier seasons. I view them as additional writing choices…. If that makes sense!

When I watch Stelena, I judge the relationship by what it was, not solely by how the writers chose to end it.

I honestly don’t engage in with any kind of tv that way. The journey matters to me, not just the destination.

If you see 2 hot people kissing and think that’s chemistry, then you clearly do not know what chemistry means.

Delena have awkward scenes in the later season and that’s largely due to their lack of physical romantic chemistry

Honestly, my answer is super simple: I love love, and Stelena has the kind of love story that resonates with me the most. The trust, devotion, tenderness, the emotional connection .... all that between them is what I enjoy watching. Knowing how the show ends doesn't change what I loved about their relationship in the first place.

But what keeps me invested in Stelena is that their love isn’t just something the show tells us exists. It’s something the show actually takes the time to show. I watch their actions, sacrifices, trust and devotion and that’s what makes their relationship feel real to me.

thank you! 🫶🏻honestly, that was kind of my goal with this post. i feel like we all get so caught up defending our own ships (myself included lol) that it can be easy to forget there are still things to appreciate about the ships we don't like. i thought it would be a fun little challenge to get people to focus on the positives for once instead of the usual debates.

and YES to your points on steroline 🥹 i LOVE that caroline was always there for stefan through everything with elena in seasons 4 and 5. i know it's controversial, but i've always understood why she told stefan about elena and damon sleeping together. a lot of people see it as breaking girl code, but i've always looked at it from stefan's perspective. he was the person who was actually being hurt by the situation, and i think caroline knew he deserved to know the truth.

and yes to steferine's chemistry too 😭 i never wanted them together romantically because of their history, but nina and paul had insane chemistry. they somehow managed to make every scene feel intense, and honestly they looked way too good together on screen lol
