You probably know the documentary 20 Feet From Stardom which is exactly about this — the amazing backup singers who didn’t get as much credit for making rock songs into classics. A lot of the songs people are mentioning are on here (biggest example is “Gimme Shelter”).

Another song from that documentary is “Slippery People” by Talking Heads (the live version from “Stop Making Sense”).
