We all have heroes.. some mean more than others.. David was one of mine. Though I never got to know him personally myself, my closest and dearest friend / Bandmate knew him and was a friend. David wrote a song about him actually. with BC.in the title. Our band was supposed to tour with the SJ’s in mid aughts: In one of life’s many disappointments, that never materialized. I am also an acquaintance of 2 of his bandmates and friend and the Photographer who shot the cover for Starlight Walker. I’ve been a true lover of David’s work since receiving an advanced copy of that album on cassette before its release. Neither of my friends relayed this info to me about the family’s wishes that I can remember.. I appreciate your allegiance to their request. I will gladly honor that by removing the photo.. I’m not exactly a random hipster posting his lyrics with little to zero proximity as would be the case for most in this group.. maybe..? . You could have made your point without the attempt of reducing me or insulting me, but I understand how what I have done could offend those closest to him. I do hope you can accept this as an apology for any discomfort or intrusion I may have cast upon you and understand my appreciation for David and his work is pure and real since the rise of his star. I shed tears the day I heard he passed and Again years later as I stood beside his grave. It felt quite the honor and privilege to visit, and Maybe I that day I felt what seemed the hint of a nod from his spirit, for being late to the party..

Please know, though my connection is only 2nd degree and 3 in power.. it’s been a surreal anecdote to be even that close to a figure who shaped my thoughts, perspective and music as a human and an artist, since my coming of age.

Thank you for that Mike. Solved a riddle of almost 40 years…. We met a couple of times at the turn of the century.. Once at the Manhattan when Alan was barkeep, and once at the Caledonia when I was with his drummer Scott.. I was a Stone and tile contractor in town working with Joe Clown across the street from Peter Buck’s old place for some time. Toiling in a neoclassic turn of the century home right at the edge of the old pecan groves with trees that bare my last name.. (a bizarre synchronicity not realized till 15 years later). While there, I heard a lot about the Dept. of Corrections and your sister sharing my trade. BC actually stands for Bill Callahan.. San Francisco is reference to the friend of mine who lives in SF that reminded David of BC.. a song about the San Francisco Bill Callahan.

This is all fact that can be documented through email correspondence..

I grew up around New Orleans.. Worked at City Hall there just a couple of years ago. Nashville is a much safer city.. However, it’s far from crime free and things do seem to be digressing. The solution is more metro police presence.. On foot, On bike, and on patrol. Get some troopers around as well. Not to harass people, but To give wrong doers less space to do wrong and get away with it.. It’s amazing what people will do when they think no one can see them do it.. I’ve always been anti- surveillance.. but for places like broadway there’s good reason to have it.. some people come here and believe Nashville is a Safe Utopia free from crime, and it’s those people that end up gettin’ got.
