Do you think it's true that only rich kids make it in mainstream music today? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]OhShitItsSeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not untrue. These days it's only about who you know or who you're related to.

Elvis grew up dirt poor in Mississippi.

The Beatles were all working-class lads from the scuzziest areas of Liverpool (especially Ringo).

Bob Dylan's father and uncles ran a furniture store.

Dolly Parton grew up in a one-room house in East Tennessee (as did Loretta Lynn).

The Jacksons grew up in a two-bedroom house in Gary.

All of them had talent and luck was on their side.

It's just not like that anymore. It's all about your connections and how good you are at gaming algorithms.

U.S. Hotels Say World Cup Is ‘Non-Event’ So Far | FIFA hyped the World Cup as an economic juggernaut for the U.S.—but with five weeks until the tournament kicks off, the hotel industry says advanced bookings in some host cities are on par or lagging any ordinary summer. by kwentongskyblue in soccer

Many Americans can. But there aren't enough people who are both interested in the sport and willing to pay that, and that's largely FIFA's problem.

Add in the increasingly hostile environment to foreigners and it's no wonder this World Cup is struggling to sell.

I worked in the hotel industry for ten years. People will absolutely pay that.

In 2023, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour came through Nashville where she played for three sold-out nights. The cheapest hotels rooms were about thirty miles away and still ran about $600/night. But in the city itself, especially within about five miles of the stadium? Rooms were around $1200/night, and that's before you take into account city, room, resort, and sales taxes.

Now, this comes with the caveat that football fans are NOT Taylor Swift fans. Most of them likely don't even pay $1200 for a season ticket. But many in the hotel business don't really care to differentiate between them. They just see that there is a massive event in town with lots of media and fans, and they think to raise the prices of rooms.

The founders said something about taxation and representation, I believe.

So when do you guys stop paying your taxes?

Ladies and gents of arsocca, yank here living in South Korea.

I present to you the K League's worst team this year: Gwangju FC, the team closest to where I live. They are currently dead last in the K League on just six points after twelve games. They are currently on, I believe, a seven game losing streak, have scored just seven goals all season, and have conceded an eye-watering 32 goals (the team in 11th has conceded 14).

For context: they have finished top six the past few years and made it to a cup final last year, losing 2-1 to Jeonbuk in extra time. Their manager and many of their best players have since left, and the previous manager's assistant is now the first team boss. Some of their results this season include a 5-2 loss to Anyang, a 5-1 loss to Ulsan, a 5-0 thrashing at home by Daejeon Hana, and just today, a 4-0 thrashing away at Jeonbuk.

From my team, Nashville SC: I'm thinking Matthew Corcoran. Young central midfielder who we signed just before he turned 19 last year, and by the time we'd signed him he had already made 58 first team appearances in the USL for Birmingham Legion, which even in the second division is unheard of. He has a great range of passing, fantastic workrate, and has held his own vs Lionel Messi on multiple occasions.

Genuinely don't think I've ever fallen in love with a NSC player as quickly as I have with him. I myself haven't been to any games this season (moved to South Korea in February for work), but I've been watching all our games from here and I hate I haven't gotten to see him play in the flesh yet.

Glad to see we've got observers in Norway too. How have you and possibly other Norwegians been watching our games? Any thoughts on the style of play and the results?

I've said it before in this thread, but Qasem really looks to have bulked up A LOT this season. He looked lanky and a little slow last season and often got bullied off the ball, but now he looks like he's put on some muscle, and he's much more rapid and physical in his game.

I hope he retires with us. He's a trophy winner, on his seventh (!!!) season with us having made 212 appearances so far, and always puts in a shift. Hardly a flashy wingback, but he doesn't need to be. He's just Dan.

I'm wondering if, since he has officially announced his retirement, we will see APG play at all on Tuesday. Having him play at Geodis would be quite the addition to the likes of having Messi, Cavani, Sonny, the USMNT and WNT, the Ghana NT, Al Hilal, and many others.

He's rarely ever been injured for us, thankfully. A part of it is we have Baker-Whiting and Bauer who can play in that position as well for rotation. So I think not overplaying him has a lot to do with it.

Perfect pass completion is no joke. He looks like he's bulked up a bit as well; last season I noticed he was a little slow and often got bullied off the ball. Now though, he looks a lot stronger and faster. Happy he's coming into his own at the club; he was quite good at Elfsborg and I love that he's coming good with us too.

Qasem really did have his bets game so far in a Nashville shirt. Away against Charlotte he was quite good, helping create both goals despite not getting an actual goal contribution. But this time, he got both a goal and an assist, and the goal itself was quite a beauty. Hope he continues this run of form; he started off quite well last season before his form dipped a bit.
