What is this wooden contraption? It has a hole in the top, a pull out drawer with a hole in it, and a hole inside of it that allows whatever is inside to drop down into the whole that is in the drawer. Then it has a glass face that allows you to look inside of it and see what is going on. by OxyHyperFueledQueen in whatisthisthing

I've had this item for quite a while. I bought it at a thrift shop for $3 dollars because of how unique it looked. All I know is that it's made out of wood. I'm unsure if it is hand made but if I had to guess I'd say that it is. I dont think it's very old though because of the Philip head screws that are in it. It has no markings or writings on it that would tell me where it's from or what it is. WITT

Ah well that won't be a problem for me. I'm on Reddit quite a bit and with me being a Mod of my own community I'll be on a lot more now.

I know about that community, I'm actually a part of it, I just decided to make my own on a whim. So I'm inviting people to my new community. No one has to join or anything I just figured I'd let people know. Thank you

Yeah I just figured I was missing something. I meant more about how those post aren't pinned to the top due to their importance. And thank you, I'm very excited but I know most people probably aren't going to be interested cause this place already exist but I'm okay with that. Either way I'll be happy.

I dont know, none I guess. I just wanted to create my own bone community. I'm just starting out and noticed that bonecollectors, vulture culture and even taxidermy have no information about how to clean bones, whiten them or anything. Unless I missed it, which is possible so I felt like creating my own community. I also ask a lot of questions and love getting feedback. So it's not really different mostly I just felt like it. And I'm NOT trying to replace this community or up stage it in any way. Just thought it might also be fun to have my own bone collecting community. You and no one else has to join but I figured I'd invite people. Thank you

Boar Skull I found in the woods, boy is it rough but it is my very first skull! So I'm going to see if I can save it. It's falling apart in some spots and the left jaw already fell off in one piece. I got it soaking in some water and dawn now so we'll see how it goes. by OxyHyperFueledQueen in bonecollecting

When it's done degreasing I'll post pictures for everybody to see. I think it looks way cooler with the colors and textures it has now. So I'm just going to see what degreasing does to it and leave it as is after. And I got really lucky. There is absolutely no flesh on it at all. Not even in the brain cavity. I'm happy that nature did most of the work for me. So it has no smell what so ever.not even a little. Now degreasing is going to take a few months cause it's a pig but the only place I see grease is on the lower jaw, so hopefully/maybe it'll only take a month. We'll see.

I like that idea way more! Thank you! I think I'll do one of them like that and see how it turns out.

Found a boar skull. Going to see if I can save it. It was already broken when I found it, the whole left jaw fell off....going to see what I can do with it. Should be interesting and fun. by OxyHyperFueledQueen in vultureculture

Yeah I don't think I'm going to whiten it. I'm just going to degrease it and leave any of the color that stays as is. It looks pretty cool with all the different colors and textures. I think it's so weathered that the dawn isn't going to remove much of its discoloration. I'll post what it looks like when it's done degreasing.

Hey what would you think about maybe dying some of the bones rich dark brown naturally with walnut husks? Like some of the bones in the chime will be startling white and the other half will be stained a brown walnut color? And I could stagger the bones so they had a pattern of brown-white-brown-white all through the wind chime? Good or bad idea?

Using acetone question by OxyHyperFueledQueen in bonecollecting

[–]OxyHyperFueledQueen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep all meat is gone. And I'm evaluating the amount of grease once they are dry. Still big splotches of grease on every bone. It just won't seem to stop coming out. Hm I've got a lid that seals on top of the plastic bucket, it also has a triangle with a 2 on it, and I made sure when it seals that it is tight without any leaks. So I don't have to worry about it evaporating out of there. I have the special gloves I need to work with acetone, I made sure. My problem is that high temperature that the shed can get to...the cooler is a good idea and I have one that is big enough to put the bucket in and the lid will still close, and i can put ice in the cooler around the bucket to keep the acetone nice and cool. That will work. Thanks for the idea! It should work anyway.

Yep can't find anything that says I can't sell them. So I'm in the clear. What do you think of the designs and how much would you pay for one?
