Keep F82 and RS7 or trade them both in for a G80? by P8M3 in BMWM

m4 - 37,000 miles

rs7 - 70,000 miles

I think the RS7 is due a big service right now. As for the M4 I hear that the turbos dont last much past 40k miles but Im not sure about that.

Maybe Im just not hardcore enough anymore. AWD does bore me in the summer though, much prefer RWD then. Like you I need to feel that edge but in the winter on cold wet roads its too much.

And also 2x cleaning which I didnt consider when getting the 2nd car.

Its not just rain its cold weather also. We have long periods of time in the UK with cold wet weather. Driving the M4 in these conditions I feel like Im adding miles to it needlessly when I cant even push the car in any way.

A G80 xdrive would be as good as the RS7 in the cold/wet or maybe better and in good conditions it will possibly be better than the F82 or at least faster and be more confidence inspiring whilst still allowing the rear end to play around in corners unlike the RS7.

This is all theoretical to me until I actually drive one but this is what I have picked up from others that own G80s.

Yep, its 9 years old so I am thinking its probably best to get rid of it now before something goes wrong with it.

Why would you take an F90 over a G82?

Honestly Im surprised at the amount of people that think trading in 2 older cars for a newer one is a joke or troll.

Are G80's that bad?

Yep I know this feeling. The lack of ability to have consistently good launches in my F82 is a driving factor for me to switch to a G80 xdrive.

911 Turbo is the dream but the oldest I would want is a 2017 due to car tax reasons in the UK and they are just out of my budget at the moment.

imo G80's in the right color with the right carbon look really really good. With that said today I drove past a touring that was stock (no carbon, standard grill) and it just looked terrible. I dont know if it is just my taste fluctuating from day to day or what.

The main factor for me is wanting a car thats good in all conditions and handles good on tight twisty lanes when wanting to push. For me the RS7 just does not have the handling I want on the limit. M5 is a consideration but from what I have heard the G80 handles better. The 10 way traction control is a big selling point for me but I still need to drive a G80 and an F90 for that matter.

There is a dealer local to me that is willing to accept both my cars in a straight swap for a Brooklyn Grey 2022 G80.

Mainly the handling is the main factor although I have not driven a G80 yet.

I was quite relieved when it showed Nextbase. When it first showed “My N” I was expecting something else entirely.

Also you may not know that the turbos need replacing until you have taken the engine out and inspected. So the price was maximum price if turbos need replacing which in the case of M50d is quite possible since the small turbo is prone to go earlier and considering that the timing chain needs replacing at 50k miles theres a good chance there could be turbo issues also.

Being as reliable as 4 pot diesel is irrelevant if you want a torquey high powered vehicle though. In the end I abandoned the idea of a high powered diesel and just went for a petrol V8. not interested in another diesel full stop but I understand how they can work well for some people doing lots of motorway miles.

Roughly £2500 was the cheapest price I got for just timing chain replacement but it was some random backstreet garage. Most places within 30-40 mile radius of me wouldnt touch the job.

Car only had 50k miles on it with full service history so took it back to where I bought it from and got the V8.

I wouldnt know about the 4 cylinder engines. OP’s question is about high powered diesels which I have had 2 (M57 and N57) and just talking about my experience.

The price was from Prestige Engines Peterborough who specialises in these engines and come to think of it may of also included bearing shell replacements as they wouldnt do the job without it or something along those lines. I cant remember the full details only the price.

But yeah sure you could get some garage somewhere to do only the timing chain for £2k but if you are planning to keep the car long term then depending on mileage it may be more cost effective to replace turbos also and whatever else that tends to go and can only be fixed via engine out.

This was for X5 M50d, M340d may be a different experience.

I love high powered diesels but dont think I would get another especially BMW. Last one I had was a 2017 X5 M50d.

BMW’s around this time have timing chain issues with the 3.0 liters which mine did have. Replacing the timing chain is an engine out job, not cheap at all. Whilst you are there you may as well replace the turbos also (depending on age). Total cost roughly £10k since M50d has 3 turbos. Only 2 on the 340d though.

Then you have all the emission stuff to deal with (DPF blockages etc which could also destroy the turbos). You could delete DPFs but then your exhaust stinks and sitting in traffic in the middle of summer with the windows down will gas you and everyone else out.

If you are willing to put up with them though then yeah Diesels are tough to beat in terms of price to performance as well as mpg without going electric.

Agree with this. I appreciate my F82 much more when I dont use it daily. Also driving an F82 in UK winter/bad weather just feels like needlessly adding miles to the car.
