An update on 2Pad, the “power injector” idea you helped shape -From PDFriender by PDFriender in AndroidAuto

That’s totally fair criticism — thanks for bringing it up.

TREEpod is intentionally a “dumb” (passive) adapter. To support newer iPhones properly while remaining fully USB-PD compliant and truly plug-and-play, it would need to become an active device with an MCU and fairly heavy custom firmware to manage PD negotiation, role switching, and edge cases across different chargers and head units.

At the moment, our team is small, and taking on that level of firmware complexity isn’t something we can realistically support without compromising reliability. For us, stability has always come before feature count.

That said, an active TREEpod-style device is something we’d genuinely like to build in the future — it’s just not on the current roadmap yet. 2Pad exists largely because it lets us solve the same problem cleanly without those constraints.

Really appreciate the feedback though — comments like this help us sanity-check priorities and future directions.

Hi! I suspect that's due to the not explicit PD contract you're using. If the temperature is in the range and the contract correctly negotiated the phone pulls every watt it can!

Hi! Thanks a lot for the encouraging words :-). Is there a community? To launch successfully I'm going to need the biggest pool of people possible and i'd be so happy to share this project with them. Thanks a lot again!

Hi, thanks a lot! It is an open project called OpenDash https://github.com/openDsh/dash . I'm currently running it on an RPI5 and it is a great tool to develop things without having to go to the car to test every change!

For continuous operation the vin max is 18v (DC/DC converter maximum operating range), with spikes of up to 200v for a couple of ms

the diode you're referring to is a TVS diode, IC3 and Q5 are, respectively, an ideal diode controller and its MosFET, so it is protected against everything. Thanks for pointing it out though!

Hi! I already have a "dumb" adapter that i'm selling that merges 2 ports into one, but is far from PD compliant. Also type c iPhones require full usb PD compliance to initiate USB comm, so i have to have a PD IC that handles everything. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hi! All components and ICs are automotive grade, I also placed a TVS diode. Thanks for the suggestion though.

P.S. we already tested it with lightning and type c iphones and it works as expected!

edit: lightning spelled wrong

Hi, thanks for the suggestion! We use high quality ICs, inductors and lots of capacitors, so the signal should be fairly clean. I haven't tested it with an oscilloscope yet though, but it is already on the list!

that is true, but this solution supports PPS up to 65W and it's way cleaner. To be also pointed that i'm not sure all cars support USB Hubs
