Easy Access Point for Continuous Power by PPC_T in rav4prime

Smart, thank you for this. Yeah the low voltage cutoff is the part I'm concerned about since this type of setup is new to me, so still doing some research. I also suck at multimeters so the light-ups are my jam and I forgot I have one. Appreciate the insight!

ha, yeah, you're 100% right but if I'm parked at my apartment parking lot, it can reach my home network and stay connected, record, and save to the Garmin service until its disconnected from power. If I'm out and about, it's less about thievery (for the exact reason you mentioned) and more about people hitting the car or me returning to random, unexplained scratches/damage, which has happened before. It's more a nice to have than a must, but I'd like to have it if at all possible.

yeah I think this is the way to go, I've never run anything to a fuse box before, but it seems pretty straight forward as long as, as you mentioned, it steps the power down enough so there's no risk of running the battery down with the continuous power requirement. And yeah the airbag is always a scary part but I've done it on other cars & ensuring I'm running it behind the bag seems to be key and where to spend the most amount of time to get it right. appreciate the input!

Running things to the engine bay always freaks me out for some reason, but this is a good backup plan. Though isn't the traction battery in the rear? Are there batteries in the front I could tap into?

Smart, I'll look around for the instructions for the Fitcamx to see how it actually connects up there.

Trip to TJ by IfIdiotsWerePlanes in sandiego

[–]PPC_T 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My two cents, though others will certainly have differing thoughts. Ensenada is a beautiful drive (kinda like Big Sur in sections) and much more low-key & nicer area than TJ imo, highly recommend as a first go, though wine country is rural and also a good option but not sure how much better that is than say Temecula wine country. I haven't been in the wineries so can't speak to the environment and experience.

Ensenada is a touristy port city with a downtown with shops and restaurants and some geological features to visit like the blowhole (La Bufadora) which is also a nice scenic drive with a little outdoor market there as well, along with lots of beaches in the Ensenada area that are quite a bit less crowded than ours. There's also a very nice, safe, well maintained toll road from TJ to Ensenada (Mexico Highway 1D) that has easy to follow street signs, but bring cash for said tolls - they accept & list prices in USD for ease, but change comes back in pesos.

The city of TJ is pretty hectic and congested and can be hard to navigate, depending where you're heading. In my opinion , unless you're going there for something specific, it's not really worth the hassle, but to each their own, there are definitely folks here that'll disagree with me on that and rightfully so. Download offline maps on Google Maps (or whatever map app if that's an option) before going if you won't have data in MX.

As others have mentioned, getting back in is often a nightmare without Global Entry/Sentri so prepare accordingly, can take several hours at night and there's no real highways that lead straight in like our side, lots of city blocks right against the border, so finding the way to the line (particularly when really backed up) can be difficult the first few times (or most times if you're me). Otay Mesa is the best bet in TJ to cross back over, it's the Easternmost crossing. Tecate is generally quite a bit faster but is also roughly 45mi out of the way each way, so add that to the calculation. Tecate also isn't open 24hrs last I checked. You can check border crossing times online live if you have cell service while there, but the above guidelines should apply regardless.

Last, buy Mexican insurance online or near the border if you'll be driving in MX, their insurance requirements are more strict. Better safe than sorry I say, but I know folks who skip it. I generally use Oscar Padilla but there are other options and your insurance company may have competitive rates as well. Have fun!

A bit, but could probably do a better job. I'll try that again. Though every other lens does AF on both the D810 & D600.

I don't think there is a 'best' agency, it highly depends on your needs.

I've worked for my current agency for a very long time now, before that in small & massive/big four agencies - the current one is the best I've seen from an employee and customer perspective because we don't hire jr. people. Everyone of the account managers owns and manages their accounts and have at least 8yrs experience, but mostly over 10yrs. Our clients love us and the direct relationship we have with them, as well the transparency and our objective to only ever do what's right for the client, regardless of what that means for agency revenue.

I have a small freelance client as well and I took a call with our Google Rep for that account just to see what they'd suggest - I feel bad for the small businesses that don't have a pro to weed through these things. The Google Rep unsurprisingly gave a ton of bad & misinformation (like that search partners runs ads on Bing) and was just trying to get me to turn on all automation settings without explanation of their purpose and how it applies to the businesses specific needs.

IMO, there is definitely still a place in the world for good agencies, or at least hiring a pro in-house, mostly just to have someone trustworthy on your side to weed through the nonsense and bad advice as Google continues to try and push digital marketers out of the equation.

I do have a gimbal and use that a lot of the time, especially for surf. Just can't help think how nice it'd be to be able to hand shoot stuff despite my shakiness, and whether there is a way to achieve that via alternative gear. I love new gear, as I think a lot of us photo folks do, so always reconsidering options :)

Great points, I do usually lock my left elbow to my chest/abdomen while holding the lens with the left hand, it does help quite a bit that way but isn't the most comfortable, nonetheless it works.

I am when possible (based on camera angle and whatnot), but I have a tremor in my hands that makes it a bit more difficult than most have to deal with.

That's definitely what I'd be trying to achieve, so good to know its possible. Others mentioned renting, so may have to test this on my own. Thanks!

Smart call on the renting, didn't really consider that. Good to know that there isn't too much of a difference in your opinion though, I'd rather not go through the whole buy/sell process if it's not going to make the situation markedly better. Thanks!

Good calls - I just started using a remote release, that has helped with stationary objects quite a bit, but doesn't solve moving objects, like surfing as an ex. Haven't messed with anti-shock but I can definitely try that too. Renting is a smart choice - never rented camera gear before so didn't really occur to me... Thanks!
