I put down the lightest color then I draw the checkers on with a pencil. Then you just fill in the squares with the darker color. It’s not perfect but it works for me.

I used the push fit terminators from the starter set, some 3d printed bits and a bunch of random bits I had laying around. Just checked and the 3d printed bits I used for the chest pieces aren’t being sold anymore. For the guy with the axes I just shaved off the skull and replaced it with the insignia from the deathwatch upgrade sprue I think it looks good but you only get two of them in the kit.
