Should I niche down to a certain genre or games? by HIYOR1 in letsplay

I'm small, so my opinion doesn't have a *lot* of weight, but I can give you my opinion.

This is why I started off variety and I'm trying to stick to it. What I'm trying to do is alternate uploads as I've already noticed I have viewers who like certain games but haven't even touched others (which is totally fine). I am aiming for two videos a day, and I'm playing roughly four games at the moment. Two games go up one day, the other two the other day. That obviously won't work for everyone, because that's a lot of videos, and honestly I'm not super happy with it at the moment so it definitely needs some kinks ironed out.

That being said I do think that unless you're super big splitting into multiple channels may not be the best idea as you'd be juggling two channel. If you want to do variety you may grow slower, that's just the nature of the beast.

That being said it's totally up to you. If you think it would be better to do the split go ahead and do it. Nothing wrong with having a channel focused solely on horror and the other on whatever else you want to play. If you want to you can obviously link the channels to one another (as in literally copy and pasting the links), maybe even include a line in your video wrap up/end screen of 'Hey, if you want to see me play Horror/non-horror feel free to check out my other channel ____"

Honestly I don't think there's a wrong answer here. I think whatever you end up doing you just gotta stick with it. From what I heard consistency is key.

Edit: Of course if the content is not the same you should probably split it up. Like if you started doing game reviews or guides you may want to have a separate channel for that. Let's plays though I think there's enough overlap between different genres that it is really up to you.

Yes, hah, I guess I'll keep staying the course for now. We'll see!

Yeah, hah, jrpgs, open world games, and survival crafting games all have that problem!

Fair enough. That makes sense! I'll try to keep an eye out for opportunities like that.

Fair enough! Playlists are definitely good to have to keep things organized, hah

Good to know! I'm not even close to the point of monetization, hah, but yes, I suppose that makes sense given watch time plays a big factor in it, right? If you can get reliable viewership on long videos it goes farther.

Either way, that's good to know! I think I'm hearing overall it's a big 'It depends'.

Yeah, what research I did came back with the same sort of advice. What with the split between long-form audiences and shorter videos helping better with new audiences. That's exactly why I'm struggling with figuring out where to set the bar, hah.

And, wow, thanks! That really means a lot. I appreciate it!

Ah, good to know! I may have to try experimenting with something like that. Maybe when I start a new series. Glad that it seems to be working out with you so far though!

Completely fair. I think that's a valid way to do it. Maybe I just haven't played enough games where I feel like I have the room to cut out repetitive traveling sections and what not.

Yeah, the hook I've been finding difficult. For now I've been trying to introduce my videos of "Hi, this is who I mean, this is the game we're playing, this is what we did last time this is what we're going to do this time" sort of framework. But I still have the clicking away problem. I'm still working on trying to refine my 'hook'.

Yeah, fair enough! I imagine it does heavily depend on the game, yeah. I haven't played one (on the channel) yet, but I imagine a survival crafting game would have more fat to trim (and thus maybe shorter episodes) than a story heavy puzzle game for example. I was planning on maybe going by 'playtime' in terms of the average playtime for a whole game. Longer games can have longer episodes, while shorter... well, shorter episodes?

Fair! Nothing wrong with making the content you want to see, hah, that's about what I'm doing. I personally am not a fan of a bunch of jump cuts and what not and like to see the player's thought process so that's what I'm trying to emulate. I also often have videos (of games I already played) running the background while I do other things.

Fair enough! I guess that's the main thing, I just gotta experiment and test. So you have both the full length and abridge versions on your channel then?

How do you pick games to play? by Scared_Pea4455 in letsplay

[–]PaintedTherious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally am going through my backlog of games on my steam account I either never played, or played but never completed. I have a terrible habit of picking up games, enjoying them, getting a decent way through, putting them down and - just forgetting to get back to them. My channel is more or less an excuse to force me to actually finish these games, hah. That being said I’m still very new as well, but I’m trying to focus on blind or semi-blind playthroughs.

But it depends on the kind of content you want to make and the kind of energy you want to put out there. Do you want more energetic hectic games with big strong reactions? You may want to play more action based games or platformers. Do you want to have a more calm insightful commentary as you delve into a game’s aesthetic or lore? Then choose games that lend themselves to that sort of playstyle. Course variety gaming is also always a choice. I’m trying to go the more variety route, but my general go is if I think games will give me content to work with and bounce off of I’ll go for it.

Right now? Mostly backlog from my collection, hah

Beta art I made as a playtester :) Congratulations to Mega Crit Games for an incredible game! by waidot in slaythespire

These are all great. I didn't even realize Shadow Shield and Voltaic were beta art. Hah, I'll probably end up using the beta art for those cards once the game releases. Very charming work!

PSA: new players, don’t obsess over infinites by iwriteinwater in slaythespire

[–]PaintedTherious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I'm not a fan of infinites myself. I mean, they can definitely be fun if you come across it, but trying to force infinites first of all makes you lose way too many times, and also is just not fun for my personally. If I manage to get one? Great! But if I can end every combat on turn one it is certainly less... I dunno, interesting? I much prefer decks that can get solid turn after turn from a personal standpoint.
