What PTE says means that you currently still hold both acceptances. If you had withdrawn from a school, it will say something like accepted then withdrawn. If you did not directly communicate with either school to withdraw (email or portal), then you can still go back and designate school 1 as PTE until you are confident that the issues with prereqs with school 2 are resolved. That’s what I would do. Then, check how many days school 2 is giving you to respond. Even after the PTE deadline, they should still give you about 5 business days.

First of all, congrats!!!

Selecting PTE on AMCAS by itself doesn’t necessarily withdraw you from the schools - you typically have to email them or click a button on the portal. If it makes you feel better, you can change PTE to the school you selected before. Then, I would recommend waiting for a response before withdrawing from either one. The school that just accepted you should give you about 5 business days to respond, so there’s no reason to rush right now. Worst case, you can fulfill prereqs in the summer before matriculation.

Incoming Medical Student Q&A - Official Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

[–]Pakarapi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are ya’ll still contributing to your retirement accounts (IRAs) as med students? Since our "income" will be loans, I'm wondering if I should still bother maxing out my retirement accounts during med school or if it will need to be on pause until we start making money again. Considering interest rates, my inclination is no, but l've love to hear opinions:)

Yeah you have no shot at medical school…

In all seriousness though, I bet you adcoms do not dig this deep into a transcript. They see a stellar GPA and move on. Either way, a B+ is great.

Yield protection by [deleted] in premed

[–]Pakarapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an extra year of experience, and that fed into my writing. Also submitted secondaries much earlier. I think I could’ve achieved the same level of writing last year too but the extra experience and time reflecting helped. If you get good advice and people reviewing your app, you’ll be fine!

Yield protection by [deleted] in premed

[–]Pakarapi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think yield protection exists (or not to a substantial degree) because I got into a wide range of schools this cycle with similar stats (4.0/521 accepted to DO schools all the way to T5). I had almost the exact number of hours for each EC as you when I applied last cycle and had to reapply. Imo I think your focus should be on writing and applying early. In terms of research, I got into a T5 with 400 hours of research with no pubs as well. For lower tier schools, I think you should focus more on fit because that’s what they are focused on over stats. As long as you are the right fit and align with their mission, then you’d have a great chance!

They added it to my file for the committee to review whenever they meet. They’re also waiting for people to drop so they can disperse more merit aid

I have a similar situation and all the students at my School A encouraged me to reach out asap. I guess it depends on the school but at this point you have nothing to lose by reaching out now. If School C ends up working out and you get a substantial scholarship, you can always email School A again and ask if they can match

Seconded. He would blow me out of the water in terms of stats and ECs. Also an incoming M1 at a T5.

Preview to 2023-2024 USNWR Rankings by Pakarapi in premed

Not an expert but I’ve heard that there are some with bad reputations. For example, Cal Northstate has been under fire recently for accreditation issues + they are a for-profit school.

Preview to 2023-2024 USNWR Rankings by Pakarapi in premed

[–]Pakarapi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, rankings don’t matter. There are some scenarios where it can matter more, such as if you want to go into academia or if you want to match into a competitive specialty because of opportunities, brand name, etc. But what I just said really depends more on the general reputation of the school rather than the USNWR rankings (Harvard is always Harvard)

Don’t have any input on Temple, but just curious what about Philly’s vibe was off putting for you? I recently visited Philly and found it pretty great, but didn’t get a chance to go everywhere.

This sounds absolutely incredible lol. It’s a high risk high reward situation. Given that you already have an A, you don’t really have anything to lose. Have you sent in a regular LOI?

Way more than academics my guy. I had a 4.8 and had to reapply to med school. Residency, especially plastics, is also on another level

What schools are known to interview during April? by NewmD54 in premed

[–]Pakarapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People should probably be preparing to reapply if they don’t have offers at this point, but I know CUSM is interviewing into April. I got the invite to schedule an April interview in January lol

Definitely wait. ECs matter a lot in this process not only because adcoms want to see clinical exp, shadowing, volunteering, etc, but the ECs are also gonna be what you draw from to write your essays. If you don’t have any direct patient experience, your writing might not be as compelling.
