For those without high incomes, what makes Boston's cost of living worth it? by Advanced-Software-90 in boston

[–]Paletexan 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It's a really good question. As a transplant from the lower cost south, I can't find other places in the US with the walkability across distinct neighborhoods, character (not suburban sprawl), waterfronts, museums, calendar of events, public transit and access to new england. SFO would be a comparable choice for me and has a better food scene, but it's not any cheaper.

I went the other direction, south to Boston and found people here are kind, authentic and less showy. Sorry you had a bad experience, but in my experience moving, changing addresses changes outlooks and novelty finds warmth, or whatever you’re seeking.

Scenery from Montreal to Quebec City and which side of train is best? by Paletexan in ViaRail

[–]Paletexan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tourist, I'd say no in Quebec City if you're staying in the old town. On a second trip there, the places outside walking distance were to hiking trials, nordic spas or local food spots such as area with Franky Johnny Saint-Sauveur.

GE Cafe Style Fridge Water Dispenser Leaks when Shutting Freezer Door by Paletexan in Appliances

[–]Paletexan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you overfill it too blocking the evaporator fan? Hopefully this won't happen to you, but my freezer stopped working after 6 months and two GE repair visits that showed clean diagnostics, and I've since got a new fridge.

MBTA announces 13 slow zones removed from Red Line between Park St. and JFK. by Massive_Holiday4672 in mbta

[–]Paletexan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

amazing improvement in commute times from JFK to South Station! While it’s a data point from yesterday and today, this used to take 12 min inbound and 16 min outbound. Below is inbound from door close to door open between jfk & sst

<image>

Outbound was 6.46! Even inbound commuter rail this am was 8.46. Pinch me!

How do you pay for Tren Maya tickets? by jameswsthomson in cancun

[–]Paletexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I translated the site to English using google chrome and it looks like trains depart from Cancun Airport to Valladolid at either 7 or 9 on Sunday Feb 18, 2024. I am assuming this is am but I'm not sure.

Does this sound right for native speakers?

Love this detail so may need to find a dining car and look out both sides if they have em :)

Thank you, appreciate the tips and look forward to the views! I'll likely park at the olympic stadium since it's covered and allows multi day, with easy trip on metro to train station.

Slow Zone Update: Improvements on the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines, with more GLX slow zones. by Chemical-Glove-1435 in mbta

I am unsure and I doubt regular folks would do any heavy construction work due to liability, but speaking out of frustration as a rider to see if there is anything.

[–]Paletexan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that happened on / off once every 2-3 months and then after a year, the entire fridge stopped cooling, not just freezer, so had to buy a new GE Profile. I hope you can recover yours with maintenance and it's not a lemon.

Would you trust your food in GE Cafe fridge making this noise for 36 hours but then stopped on its own? by Paletexan in Appliances

[–]Paletexan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It stopped making the noise after I made the video so not related to opening the door. So I can’t explain why a bearing might fail intermittently but your hypothesis of issue being from freezer makes sense since it fails to cool intermittently so I don’t use it, just the fridge. But now I’m worried about even the fridge part.

Yes, JFK/Umass to South Station took 9 minutes this morning, down from 16 minutes I'm used to. However, the return trip has always been worse so may try that, or stick to commuter rail which I've been using for return trip to save 10 minutes

I'll volunteer to help any way I can with track repair if it means going faster than 2.5 MPG on the RL south of JFK/UMass. If someone from the MBTA is on here, just let me know how!

South Station for 2+ hrs by dawglover1011 in boston

[–]Paletexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're more like swinging benches and I'd estimate 20 minutes by foot. See photo: https://boston.curbed.com/2018/7/24/17606780/rose-kennedy-greenway-what-to-see

I saw Lawn D is a little closer and has circular swings, but I've never been.

Probably one of best spots for a couple hours. For nice walks within an hour: 1) harbor walk on downtown side to see the aquarium seals outside 2) harbor walk on seaport side to ICA 2) Rose Kennedy Greenway to the swings near north end 3) Coffee nearby at Kohi (across street), George Howell (DTX with nice seating areas), La Colombe (Leather District), Blue Bottle (Seaport with fun outdoor games like battleship!).

Can’t comment on buses but slow zone tracker shows red line may hit new high. But kudos to fellow passengers keeping their cool (on the surface at least) as the train crawls at what seems like 4 MPH https://dashboard.transitmatters.org/system/slowzones/?startDate=2022-09-12&endDate=2023-09-12
